We still look like shit in doing so. Let's say we go and beat USC in an ugly game with lots of mistakes on both sides but at the end we pull through mainly because the Lincoln Riley USC disaster really starts showing it's teeth. We then proceed to lose to Wisconsin and Cockeye at home in the same fashion we have been losing all season. Would you still consider the season a success even if Rhule doesn't make any changes to his staff because we finally made a bowl? Would he still have to clear out assistants for you to be satisfied? Would it not matter because we still look like shit even though we hit the mythical 6 win mark regardless of any assistant changes?

6 wins really isn’t any different as far as an upward trajectory is considered. The only positive thing about 6 wins is getting to a shit bowl for reps. If he brings back the same offensive staff next year it won’t be pretty.

Yes no changes says they're ok with mediocrity and that's not cool.

I’m not sure why only the offense is getting mentioned for coaching changes.UCLAbia was 125th in offense coming in to the game and White’s defense got exposed by them.
Minus the pick six, TW’s offense held them to 21 points.

We’re going to face teams who put up a lot of points. If we can still limit them, then the offense needs to do their end and score points.

If we’re looking at factors that lost us games this year, it starts with offense, then special teams, and then defense.

UCLA wanted the ball to start. They knew they could take it to White's defense. The offense's opening drive was terrible, but the reason we ran three plays in the first quarter was that the defense just got molested. Putting a struggling offense down 10-0 in the second quarter before they had a second possession was the perfect way to lose the game.

Agreed, the Tony White hype is BS like everything else with this program. He’s a better DC than Satt is an OC but not much more than that. Bieniemy made him look foolish.

The defense shows potential one week but return to being a deficiency the next.

Even "ugly" growth is a positive step. If Nebraska reaches a bowl game, it’s a clear sign of improvement for a team that has struggled to get there. Wins might not be pretty, but growth rarely is; development often means grinding out tough games and learning from mistakes.

While I believe NU still needs a new offensive coordinator, dismissing a bowl-eligible season because the wins aren’t flawless overlooks the value of growth. Growth might be messy, but every win is part of building a stronger and better team.

At 6-6, I'm happy the team gets to go to a bowl and can get those extra practices they have been lacking since 2017. But I would still want assistant changes. I think Rhule will want that too.

At Temple, Rhule went 2-10 in Year 1 and then 6-6 in Year 2. Despite the better record, he still wasn't happy with the team's offense and made big adjustments after the season. RB and WR coaches were let go or reassigned to another team role. Satterfield no longer coached QBs. They changed course from the spread offense they were running at the time to install a more physical scheme.

After Year 2 at Baylor, where they went from 1-11 to 7-6, Rhule and Phil Snow made some defensive tweaks after assessing their defensive performance. They realized they were more effective when they ran a 3-3-5 package and made that their base defense. That was after Baylor went to and won a bowl game.

Yesterday sucked. And there have been misfires through the season that leave us scratching our heads. But Rhule does show a history of making changes and fixes in the off seasons. I get we want heads on platters NOW versus December, but that is not how Rhule has generally operated. But heads tend to roll once the season comes to a close.

I have little insight in some of this. But how much has Rhule had his hand in the defense? I’m generally curious. How much it is Tony and how much it’s Rhule interjecting into the defense. One game their nails. The next. Shit show. I don’t get it.

Agree. Nebraska's defense play calling is atrocious also. You can't sit in a zone and not get pressure on the qb and expect to be successful.

6 wins in year-2. If that was simply a product of poor personnel (& not poor coaching), then I would consider it a step forward.

But that’s isn’t accurate for NU.

Year-2 is definitely a combination of poor coaching and poor personnel.

For that reason, given the level of investment and support, heads need to roll and the roster needs gutted. Bringing Corcoran (& others) back is not what NU needs.

Not making a bowl game is a failure. Making a bowl game and no staff changes is also a failure. Not making a bowl game and no staff changes is an unmitigated disaster.

I think the people give the defense a pass because the offensive ineptitude is so in our faces. We avg 23.6 ppg (101st). 54 teams average 30 or more ppg. To expect the defense to keep opponents at 20 or less game after game is unreasonable. Then you factor the offense and special teams giving points away-yesterday 8 in a seven point loss and we have the results we keep getting.

Rhule keeps asking along the lines of "why is it so hard for us and easy for other teams". The answer is fairly obvious: when we have the ball what we do makes it simple for the defense to play aggressively and attack. We don't adjust or adapt. Or if we do, then it is poorly executed.

When we are on defense, we have a tendency to sit back, with no pressure on the quarterback, and keep everything in front of us while the opposing offense just marches down the field. Stop the run and get pressure on the quarterback has been defense 101 since the game and the forward pass was invented.

I don't get the jekyll and hyde act with the defense either.

If we don’t make a bowl in year 2, it would be an embarrassment. I wish there was a clause in his contract that states he can be fired without a buyout for failing to make a bowl. This program needs to be blown up.
