It’s 2AM in the Maldives….

it does matter what the team is ranked. If this happened against 1-6 Utah state it’s much different than against Ohio State.

Good point about rankings. If this was beginning of September I’d agree. But it’s late October. Rankings matter at this point of the year.

We haven’t beat a top 5 team in 23 years. I’m bummed we didn’t pull this one out. But it’s a step in the right direction and Rhule has us going in the right direction.
The ranking of the opponent definitely has an impact on fan perception of the game's outcome and should give the team confidence...

BUT

A loss is by definition not a step in the right direction.

I meant that it doesn't matter what the other team is ranked, when Nebraska loses every close game it plays, whether the team is 4-4 or 8-0. That was my point.

Yes it's not as embarrassing to lose to #4 Ohio State as it would be to lose to 1-6 Utah St. I just didn't figure that needed to be clarified lol

Nebraska has lost to the 3 ranked teams (2 top 15), and beat everyone else. So rankings do seem to matter and N has not been beaten by any 4-4 team. The worst loss was to Cockeye which is currently 10-2 and ranked 24. This is all progress.

Obviously I'm not just talking about this season. If you know anything about Husker football, you know we have a culture of losing games like this, in the exact manner that we did

I don't even know what this means. We haven't played Cockeye and no team has played 12 games.

Yep, got my I's mixed up. Even better Illini are ranked 20 w/ 6-2 record. If you are talking about past seasons I'll stop replying then. I thought we were discussing Nebraska getting better, but didn't know you were adding in 1st year record as well for judging THIS teams play today.

Imagine that Georgia has played 20 games in the last five years where they have the ball late in the 4th with an opportunity for a game-winning drive. And during these last five years they've lost every single game, almost always with an uninspiring drive ending in a turnover.

It continues happening this year and someone on your board says: "man, sure doesn't look like we've fixed that issue yet"

Would you understand what they were saying? Or would you go "calm down it's only happened twice so far this year and both teams were ranked"

Nebraska used to lose every close game. Now we lose *most* close games.

This year we beat Buttgers in a close game. Not a great team but a step in the right direction. That’s a game we lose in years past.

I get your sentiment. But don’t Motte and Bailey the rankings argument. Nebraska football has been in a rough state. You can make progress while losing to teams like Ohio State.

Yeah, Calm down haha. New coach, new QB. That's me. Again, I get your point and think that's a terrible way to look at the team this year or the Rhule years. To each his own.

Yeah it's terrible to see patterns that continue year after year and take a note of whether they have or haven't been resolved. Thanks Georgia

I get that. I think it’s true in most cases.
But there are Pyrrhic Victories. Which means there are “Laevinic defeats.” You can definitely take a step in the right direction in a loss.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news here, but Frost at this point in his career at Nebraska had won more one-possession games than Rhule has

Agree with everything you said, but want to know where you’re staying in the Maldives? My wife and I stayed at Kudo Bondos and Thulagiri before heading to the Aman in Sri Lanka. Wanted the overwater villas near the Male airport. As you know, there’s literally over 1,000 great hotel islands to choose from. Curious if you have any recommendations for our next trip over there? Awesome job keeping up with the Big Red from over there!
Love Aman Resorts…. That sounds like a lovely trip between there and Maldives previously. We won’t be staying in Sri Lanka on the way home but are connecting through Colombo.

We are staying at the St. Regis and I cannot recommend it enough. It’s about a 45 minute sea plane ride from Male here via Trans Maldivian airways, however it has been beyond worth it. We’re here for 12 nights and the service, staff, and activities have all exceeded what were very very high expectations. Helps I am a Marriott Ambassador Elite I’d imagine but the entire resort is incredible and I cannot recommend it enough. It’s true paradise.

What are you doing in the Maldives Fred? Great post btw.
Thank you- we are here for our honeymoon. 12 nights, got here on Friday the 18th and head back in the afternoon on the 30th landing back in the US on Halloween. First time out here and certainly won’t be our last, it has been the trip of a lifetime.

Congrats!

That’s true. Rhule needs to continue to win close games.
But Frost benefited from one more opportunity of a close game than Rhule has had due to poorer coaching (eg. we beat Purdoodoo by 18 whereas that game probably would’ve been a one-score game under frost). Bottom line, I’d much rather have Rhule at this point (thru 20 games) than Frost. You agree, right?

Frost (thru 20 games): 8-12
1 score games:
2018: 1-5
2019: 2-2

Rhule: (thru 20 games):
1 score games:
2023: 1-5
2024: 1-2
