Illinois Game Week

What margin of victory will prevent a message board meltdown? I realize a loss will result in a meltdown. But what if they win by 3 or 6 or something? We still on meltdown watch?
Maybe a better way to put it is…what margin of victory will satisfy the masses?
You know there’s guys on here and other boards will always be like..”well they should’ve won by *insert some amount of points here*

If we win by a lot it’ll mean nothing to those same people as well. So the pendulum will swing both ways.

Tuesday Nebraska football practice quick hits

ByMICHAEL BRUNTZ 17 minutes ago

— Nebraska running backs coach Ryan Held wasn’t tipping his hand about who would be Nebraska’s starting running back or factor into the rotation against Illinois. Held said Nebraska is close to landing on the guy and that he has been impressed with the work his group has done through fall camp and into game week prep for Illinois.

— Held said things are starting to feel back to normal with the recruiting calendar. Nebraska’s coaches will be able to make contact with 2023 prospects starting Sept. 1, and Held said he’s eager to begin combing through new film from high school and junior college prospects.

— Held said he’s starting to see what he needs to see from running back Markese Stepp, who has been fighting his way back from a toe injury and offseason surgery.

— Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said he has been pleased with the battles between the offensive and defensive lines during fall camp.

— Chinander said Nebraska likes to rotate three safeties and three corners throughout the year. Chinander said right now at the corner spot opposite Cam Taylor-Britt, Braxton Clark and Quinton Newsome are fighting for the starting job. Chinander said that Newsome and Clark have different styles of play, but they both have played well this fall.

— Chinander said he was “fired up” for the defenders who were awarded Blackshirts on Monday. He said having former Husker defenders award the jerseys made it extra special.

— Chinander said they’ve been watching old film of offenses run by Illinois offensive coordinator Tony Peterson, including old games from TV to get an idea of what Illinois might do.

— Senior Connor Culp said the kickoff competition has been a good one during fall camp. He said those who are involved in the competition are "in a really good spot." He didn't say if a decision had been made about who would be handling kickoff responsibilities when the Huskers take on Illinois.

— Culp said he's been teaching Australian punter Daniel Cerni about the game of American football. Culp said Cerni now has grown into his understanding of the game. "He's been working really hard," Culp said of Cerni. "He's improved a lot. He has a really firm understanding of the game now. I have to credit him for his hard work because he's always striving to get better."

Offensive coordinator Matt Lubick said it's always special that first game week and you can feel the added energy in the building.

– One thing Adrian Martinez does well that we don't talk a lot about: He doesn't get tired, Lubick says. Martinez pushes the pace in practice all the time. He's also been throwing it more accurately, by the coach's eye.

– Here's what Lubick said specifically about running back: "We do feel like we've closed in on one. We're not releasing any depth chart right now, but we want one guy to kind of take the bulk of the load. ... And sometimes a game determines that. A guy gets in there and is running really well, and breaking tackles, and doing a good job, he stays in there." But you also need to be smart to bring in another if a guy is tiring on a long drive. "And we feel like we have capable backs to do that."

– Lubick said he'd feel good if Sevion Morrison, Gabe Ervin or Markese Stepp had to be the guy. A heavy load for a No. 1 back, he said, might be between 20 to 26 carries in a game.

– The OC said it's not just about your original play calls, but having some answers off of those sets for what the opposition throws at you. "We've got to have plays no matter what they come out in that we feel like we can execute and we have answers to those issues."

– Lubick said the Huskers try to do as many game-like scenarios as possible so nothing will surprise new guys, but obviously you never know for sure how they'll respond. "What we've found is the more focused you can actually be on a specific assignment on that play, alleviates worries. If you start thinking about everything: the game, haven't played right ... that's when you lose focus and the nerves actually get to you."

– I'll have more from Tony Tuioti about the D-line, but he threw in a nice plug for Nash Hutmacher as a guy who has continued to have a strong camp and could get some reps in that rotation as the season goes on. He'll be on the travel roster.

Just play keep-away from the linebackers and we're good.
