Hockey is so underrated as a sport

I was in Buffalo at a Sabres-Flyers game a decade ago. Pretty chippy game all the way through. With about 2:00 to go, a Flyer player just shot straight across the rink and blasted a Sabre player. It was on.

EVERY player on both benches cleared and it was a Donnybrook to end all Donnybrooks. The refs eventually gave up and let everyone brawl until they ran out of gas. Didn’t even bother with penalties, just called the game over and sent everyone to their dressing rooms.

This will always be one of my favorite memories

It's one of those sports I rarely think about, but then I come across a game and am hooked again.

My first hockey game was a Tri City Storm vs Omaha Lancers preseason game. It ended with a legit bench clearing brawl and ten players got ejected. I was a fan after that.

Hockey is ok I guess

Full disclosure: as a kid growing up in South Omaha, I lived between two Omaha Knights players. My parents obviously became fans given that proximity, and they got to know a lot of the players as they came through that franchise. Dad is still good friends with Bill Swarbrick, and prior to his passing Moto McLean. It was on a fishing trip in 1981 with Bill and Moto that I caught the Arctic Grayling that I mentioned in the "outdoors" thread.

I remember calling home to chat with them when they moved into their house at Beaver Lake, and the place was "bumping" with a breaking in soiree. I asked my Dad who was there, and he said pretty much all the old hockey guys: Swarbrick, Moto, Gordie ...

Me: Gordie who?

Dad: Gordie Howe

Me: You KNOW GORDIE HOWE?

Dad: I've cleaned up more of Gordie Howe's puke than I'd care to admit. You want to talk to him? Hang on ...

Gordie: "Who the fuck is this?"

Me: Yep, you're Gordie Howe ...

Clester thinks Hockey is racist but sends his kid to Cockeyes.

Fighting has been a part of hockey since it's inception. It's basically in the rule book as yeah, that's cool. Kick the crap out of each other for one minute, but then right after you are going to hockey jail.

Seems similar to the real world...sure, get in a fight in public, but if you don't listen to the refs, yer going to jail with a 5 minute major.

Wait, did I just come up on another racist idea? Listen to the refs and you don't go to 5 minute major jail?

YIKES, I better quit typing or it's gonna get pretty woke snowflakey in here.

Just a note for the Omaha-area hockey fans: Bill Swarbrick has passed away. Former Omaha Knight, CHL referee and instrumental in founding the O.M.A.H.A. youth hockey organization. He was a good friend of my Dad's for close to 70 years. RIP William Thomas Swarbrick.

I've only been to one live hockey game/match whatevs, it was Lincoln Stars vs someone when I was 19 on frat dad's weekend. Neither my dad or I had a clue about hockey, I wasn't old enough to drink, and the only "fight" was pretty lame. Sad Boner.

NHL seems really boring on TV during the regular season, and rad as fuck during the playoffs. I might be wrong, but that's my current opinion.

You're not wrong, but the NHL regular season means more than the NBA regular season. Holy shit, you want to talk about boring. Just tune in for the last 2 minutes to see them try, and spend the remainder of the game broadcast time doing something useful.

You're not completely wrong about NBA either, but I haven't watched a regular season NBA game since the mid to late 90's. The last 2 minutes often determine the outcome of the game, but I f'n hate watching free throws and timeouts.
