this is why you should shop at fareway lol
I’ve heard Fareway has a pretty good meat section. It’s one of those things of force of habit. “We need to get groceries, so let’s go to Hyvee”. We usually go to Sioux City or Norfolk for groceries, I know there is a couple of them there but not sure about Norfolk. Hyvee has gotten expensive overall lately and their fuel saver sucks anymore. Definitely need to push ourselves to try fareway lol

Hy-Vee is honestly not great for steak. Find a fareway or Costco and you'll never buy at Hy-Vee again

Fareway is legit. When I travel back to Omaha I bring a cooler to load up with meats from Fareway. Next best thing to getting your own steer butchered

Recently got sent an Omaha Steaks gift box, didn’t have very high expectations, but still ended up very underwhelmed.

Cooked up the sirloins tonight, reverse seared them on the grill, got them pretty much right at MR but they still came out super tough and a touch rubbery to the point where it wasn’t even very enjoyable to eat. Threw some of the garlic breads in the oven that came in the box as well, pretty sure they are just a rebranded Sysco item, kind of stale and I laughed at the attempt to put butter inside of them.

Grilled up some of the burgers a few nights ago and they were probably the best item, decent flavor and didn’t cook down too much, makes for an easy dinner as well throwing them on the grill, but nothing to write home about.

Made some of the hot dogs as well, not terrible but completely average at best.

Still have the desert things to try but at this point pretty sure they will be on par with gas station strudels.

The cherry on top was a $120 wine voucher that came with the box but the cheapest wine package they offer is $300, no thanks.

Has Omaha Steaks ever been decent? I have no idea how they stay in business, I guess I underestimate how many people fall for the branding and aren’t aware of what a decent steak tastes like.
For probably a couple decades now. Expensive too!

Very true if you're going to a grocery store and not a butcher shop. Fareway's fresh ground chuck is off the hook.

We typically buy our steaks at BIG Meats, or Fareway. Occasionally we'll hit Mercato or Stoysich for steaks as well.

This is all in the Omaha area FWIW

Went to the Mercato, the Piedmont beef place. Got a box of 16 frozen steaks for $99. Only had their fresh stuff from the counter. Will report back. But yeah Fareway is the spot, or Leon's too if you're in Lincoln.

Yeh, very pedestrian at best. I don’t have the heart to tell my B-I-L not to keep giving them to me for Christmas every year. Much better streaks can be had at most grocery stores, and my buddies that get a whole or partial cow butchered are even better.
Piedmontese?

They were pretty average unfortunately

Some really nice Japanese restaurants have Omaha steaks on their menu. Super high priced. I’m not sure if they get first pick at the best stuff or if they’re selling the same shit I buy. Either way, the branding works incredibly well even on the other side of the world.

To be fair I do get my beef from friends instead of online/stores but I’ve had Omaha steaks and it’s garbage

My rankings:

1) Just Good Meat (never a cut that was less than great)
2) Small town farmer's cow from a friend of a friend (really good, and pricing is way better that way).
3) Fareway (good stuff)
4) Hy-Vee/Baker's (pretty good, quality varies)
5) Wal-Mart (fine)
....
....
X) Omaha Steaks
X+1) Parking lot steaks from someone sketchy with an unexplained truckload

I assume other butcher shops are also great, but I default to JGM every time I want butcher shop meat, so I haven't shopped around.

Costco needs to be 3b on that list

Does fareway have good deals on chicken breast? I've been trying to find a replacement for Hy-Vee since the ones out of their meat case are so much better than the frozen garbage. They're just pricy.

I always thought they were good (although its probably been 15 years since I ordered some), just way overpriced.
