Basketball Gavin Griffiths Is N

Piscataway to Lincoln is going to be a hell of an adjustment.

I remember going to the game at Rutgers a few years ago and the amount of Bob/Nancy from Ogalalla walking around Jersey like they were going to get mugged at any given point in time was absolutely hilarious.

Would be down for this strategy - bring a kid in, let him feel and learn the culture/system, let him go somewhere else to get more minutes and develop, then bring him home for a Final Four run!
I have Griffiths as a 9/10 on the Kendall Blue scale of a dude who will show up in a major conference and look like he has no idea how to play basketball.

He's better than Blue, but I don't see him as a fit in Lincoln. I feel like his confidence was absolutely shook last season. I imagine the dude feels some trauma related to Nebraska.

I wouldn't be against a return. Maybe this year has repaired his confidence. Dude has extremely underrated* athleticism.

*due to him being a white kid with goggles, of course.

He did OK at Rutgers playing the B1G schedule, but it remains a mystery to me why he never panned out here .. not sure if he just didn't work in Hoiberg's system or what.

Some guys just need another year. Look at Pryce Sandfort moving from Cockeye to Nebraska.

Sandfort still nearly averaged 9 points per game last season at Cockeye. Gavin was just awful last year. And he seemed scared and tentative because the kid can jump out of the gym. He has freakish hops.

agree, some players just don't fit a coaches system. Or maybe he needs to be in a system where he can be more of a Chucker or wide open play. This season he's only shooting 43.8% from the floor which is 10% higher than he averaged his 1st 2 seasons. There is no doubting his talent but as we've seen this season "Team" can win over talent. Walk-Ons Hoiberg & Jacobson aren't our most talented players but they play within Fred's system thus are major reasons for our success. Below are his FG percentages

2023 Rutger FG-32.4%
2024 Nebraska FG-34.2%
2025 Temple FG-43.8%

So... they both impoved by about 10 points a game? Sounds like a pretty good comparison to me. 😉

PS 8.8 > 17.4
GG 2.1 > 11.8

But you're right about his hops. When we recrutied him, I pictured him as just a 3-point gunner (again, probably due to his afforemented complexion and goggles), but then there was a video of him during preseason practice where he was in the corner, cut backdoor, caught a lob and finished with the ally-oop with a reverse dunk, and I was like, damn. Kid is ath-a-letic.

Like I said, I wouldn't mind giving him a second shot.

Here's what 2026-2027 looks like

? - Frager - Sandfort - Berke (?) - Oogie

Leaves us Jacobsen, Essegian, Rhymes & Curtis off the bench.

We lose 5 seniors, with 3 of them main contributors. 2 incoming freshmen so 3 slots open to fill.

And Sandfort production went up not down.

I was super optimistic when Gavin came in. He looked like a freak when he played against us. He looked like a freak in a bad way when he played for us.

Why do you have a ? next to Berke? Do you think he may not be back?

Love the potential of Oogie but tough part is we really don't have much to go on. Or is the back injury something that is career threatening? Berke & Curtis aren't big threats from the 3 pt line so I would expect Hoiberg to bring in a proven big that can shoot the 3 at a decent percentage. Feels like we have a decent amount of 6-4 to 6-7 SG/SF/Wing types that can make 3's. Probably need a PG. Wondering if we will have any attrition to the Portal whether it is because they aren't going to play or on the other side teams start throwing big coin at players like Frager & Sandforth.
