Multiple sources are saying that Nike reps are expected in Lincoln this weekend for the Nebraska–M1chigan game. With M already being a Nike school, the timing isn’t lost on anyone.
Nebraska is still locked into its Adidas deal, but we’re told Nike has floated the idea of covering the buyout penalty themselves if NU wanted to exit early. On top of that, there’s chatter that Nike would be prepared to pump NIL money directly into Nebraska athletes as part of a broader partnership push.
The backdrop here is Nike’s frustration after losing Penn State to Adidas on that massive 10-year, $300M deal. They don’t want to miss another major Big Ten brand with history and reach.
Nothing signed yet, but the fact top exec Nike people are in town and actively sweetening the pot with NIL support makes this one worth keeping a very close eye on.
University of Nebraska leadership has been in talks with Nike representation. Including Amy Montagne President of Nike, Tom Clarke Chief Growth Initiatives Officer and Nicole Graham Chief Marketing Officer. They are fostering a deal that is 10 years $250mm, this includes matching the current $5M pledge towards scholarship funding at the university as well as an additional $200k in student athlete NIL funding annually. This nearly doubles the current contract NU has with Adidas.
