Ekeler hired as ST Coordinator

Has Special Ed retaken his rightful throne at the helm of special teams?

Coach Matt as of year four will have had three STCs. Good, bad? Discuss
Feels like a bad look when a Nebraska native, who claimed he wanted to come back home, leaves for the west coast a year later. At the same time it doesn't make Eckler look great either. Dude seems like a mercenary, not sure what to take seriously from him.

Yea he doesn’t stay anywhere for long. Tennessee was his longest tenure. After seeing that, can’t say I’m all that surprised.

I don’t know the man and I know people who do love him, but every profile I’ve ever read of him makes it seem like (1) he’s incredibly intense and impulsive in a way that could definitely create friction and make him difficult to work with and (2) he isn’t going to sit still ever.

So yeah I’d rather have him here, but I don’t think him leaving is an indictment on Rhule or anyone else really

After talking to a few people that would be considered "in the know", I now understand a little bit more about what Rhule may have been referencing in his interviews last week.

Eck put a lot of emphasis on his guys getting their S&T stats, to the point where it became a bit contentious because you had guys like Barney trying to return kickoffs on kicks that shouldn't have been returned because Eck was telling them that they needed to get their stats. I didn't think anything about it, but Sam M. was crapping all over our kick off returns giving us really crappy field position over the last several games. I forget what he referenced it as, but he had a point because we were regularly returning kicks from deep in the end zone and then getting tackled well before the 20.

From my understanding, it became a heated discussion because Rhule felt like Eck was putting his guys' opportunities for S&T stats over the team.

We lost a lot of yards vs Utah because we thought it was a good idea to take it out of the endzone. Wouldn't have mattered in that game, obviously, but it was frustrating. Might be more games like that but this is the freshest in my mind.

I'm also curious how much our special teams improved overall because we found a long snapper and a more consistent kicker. Did Ekeler have a role in bringing in Gallic and/or Cunanan?
