Edit: Williams Commits To Auburn

I get what you mean but there are actual insiders and this isn’t a Fort Knox level secret. I guarantee some boosters got some info on what went down behind the scenes
In that case I’d tag in @MtnHusker who says he knows what a couple boosters know

Not saying I know what boosters know but I have some booster friends that share some information occasionally. I doubt they would know about this but will ask. Most of them are not exactly on Frost's Christmas Card List as they are frustrated with the way he runs the program, and have voiced that concern to Turd.

I was hoping we could take Williams & Lenhart. We need all the help we can get for athletes rushing the passer.

Don't worry Mongo said they will let everyone know the deets in this week's Tunnel Talk, but like @Huskerbuck85 said they probably don't know any more than we do. But if I've been following along correctly it will go something like a this - The coaches told Noonan that they were only taking 2 Edge recruits this cycle. They have Lenhardt higher on their board then Williams for #2. Williams jumps the gun and commits before the coaches gave him the ok, none of the coaches acknowledged his commitment on Twitter by the way. The coaches don't take his commit because they were waiting to see what Lenhardt was going to do, or he already committed or was going to commit soon, and they don't want to break their word to Noonan about only taking 2. It's also possible they only have room for 2 (Noonan, Lenhardt) but you would think they could work the numbers and get Williams in because they are really in no position to be turn high level Edge recruits away.

Don’t even need to read TT now. You nailed it. But one might reply to Mongo and ask, “and just how the F do you actually know, Mongo?”

The coaches not acknowledging his commit on twitter along with his decommitment tweet saying “due to the lapse in communication i am decommitting” really make it seem like we dropped the ball here.

The sentiment is that the defensive staff overruled Joseph (it’s his area) on taking Williams and he wasn’t too happy about it because it caused him some cred.

You know, I think Nebraska is at a spot where we need dudes. IDGAF about numbers... Figure it out later.
You would think with all they went through to get Mathis it would be a no brainer, but they really must be afraid that they are going to make the Noonans mad, and he will decommit I guess. I would hope at least they would have a conversation with the Noonans and explained that things have changed and taking another guy is the best for the team. You probably know better than I but it's a possibility that they lose Tannor, Mathis and Nelson after this year, so why not take 3. Mongo did say if that happens, they will take a 3rd guy, but it would be a transfer not a high school guy which make sense because the next guys up are Gunnerson, Butler and Appleget. If it was me, I would still take the 3 high school guys and the transfer because after this year they are going to be pretty low on numbers.

***OK, so let’s talk Ashley Williams/Cameron Lenhardt. There was a pecking order for Nebraska, and Lenhardt was ahead of Williams. The official visit dates don’t support that, but going back to the end of May, I knew that Lenhardt was coming the last week June. No rhyme or reason for it that I know of (he didn’t take any other official visits).

***I am going to point out some obvious details and differences, and I think you will see what happened.

The Huskers were using a pair of coaches to recruit Williams. The Nebraska staff wasn’t just recruiting Williams though they were also recruiting his family. This was from Williams’ commitment story: “Coach (Erik) Chinander was communicating with me a lot during the process, and coach Mickey Joseph talked to me and also my dad, which was rare.” Nothing about Mike Dawson.

This was simply a case of great regional recruiting effort not aligning with the position board at EDGE. It didn’t get past some of you that there was no coaches’ reaction to the news following Williams’ commitment announcement.

That’s because the commitment wouldn’t be accepted because Lenhardt was still out there along with NU’s promise to Maverick Noonan to just take two EDGEs in 2023. Unless Garrett Nelson were to go pro, in which case the Huskers could take three (but one of those three would likely be a portal transfer).

That type of miscommunication between a regional recruiter and another position coach is rare. However, this one is fairly explainable.

First, the staff was scattered around after the Fourth of July and taking some personal time for vacation.

Second, there may have been some desperation on Williams’ part. Supposedly, Williams tried to commit to Minnesota but there wasn’t a spot for him. Panic may have driven the timing of his commitment to NU and likely lent itself to the miscommunication even more because of a rushed timeline.

But third, and more importantly, was that the Nebraska staff – most notably Dawson – had always favored Lenhardt over Williams, despite the earlier official visit.

From the times that I spoke with Williams, he never once mentioned Dawson calling him. It was always Joseph and Chinander. But when it came to Lenhardt, the lead recruiter was the position coach.

The Huskers not only want Lenhardt the player but also the leadership he can bring to the team. He will be a defensive captain for IMG this fall, and that is very noticeable about him as a recruit.

***You may be thinking it, and I will say it: There is some competitiveness among the coaches when it comes to recruiting.

I think that it’s completely healthy and a very good dynamic to have. The catch is that the coaches must be in cadence and give each other updates on where they think they are with a recruit.

The funny thing is that Mongo had basically been saying for weeks that all three would be in this class if they wanted to be.

It’s laughable how stupid recruiting coverage is. I mean, Mongo has been saying Lenhardt is on commit watch over the next 2-3 weeks since June.

Edit: I’ll add that telling a Nebraska kid that we’re only taking two EDGE rushers when we have Mickey recruiting Louisiana doesn’t make any sense to me, especially a position we haven’t shown fuck-all at for almost a decade.

At this point It wouldn't be surprised if they end up losing both Williams and Lenhardt. Totally agree on the whole Noonan thing I had a discussion with a couple of the Tator Tots on On3 about it and they think basically just because he's a legacy and we don't want to lose him it was ok to tell the Noonan's we were only taking 2.

I'd be super amazed if this was the real story. As @MtnHusker said why not take both? The Noonan piece of the puzzle would be especially stupid if that's accurate.

I've been saying the same thing about taking them both and I always get the same answer that they told the Noonan's they were only taking 2 and they don't want to go back on their word to a Legacy. I guess the Noonan's did say that they were told about only taking 2 in a radio interview at some point.

Still. As you or someone else said just go talk to the Noonans about having the opportunity to take 3. Shouldn't be that tough of a conversation.

You nailed it. Plus i’m calling bullshit on Mongo saying Lenhardt will be a defensive captain at IMG. Hell, i don’t even think he’ll start. They have these studs at Edge ahead of him and some stud ‘24 guys as well.

I'm sure Mongo just added that leadership part today, but his head coach did announce that he would be a captain earlier today -
