Dogs

Dogs are magnificent creatures, and also seem to be incredible dipshits. The 15-30 seconds or so that they're able to associate cause and effect is maddening!

Two of my dogs get to run on a country road every night so they will be tired enough to leave me alone. Two to five miles, depending on the temperature outside. In the past week, they've killed two skunks which lead to me giving four baths. They hate baths, but it takes too long to get from the skunk spray to the bath for them to make the association. Allegedly.

It's also lead to me buying an ozone generator, and much consternation.

I moved here with them full-time a few days after Thanksgiving 2021. The kill count for these two is at least:

  • 4 Skunks
  • 1 Beaver
  • 3 Racoons
  • 1 Cat
  • 2 Kittens
  • 2 Cottontail rabbit
  • 1 jackrabbit
I love them and hate them, but not at the same time.
Your dogs are bad asses. Maybe a little mean.

When I trap a skunk I usually shoot it and leave it there for a few months to rot. I guess I don’t suggest shooting your dog and leaving it outside for a few months so you may just have to wash it with tomato juice.

I’ve had to stop my corgi from trying to take on coyotes while on the farm. Dumbass.
Yea not a good idea. Wouldn’t last 10 seconds.

We have a similar problem as we have some woods and a golf course near bye. Coyotes try to lure out GSP and Lab out for a chase and it’s quite scary. To add to the predators we have huge bobcats that frequently show up in our neighbors backyards.

Bobcats love a good belly rub, people misunderstand them.

The last dog I had was a mutt - half Boston terrier and half poodle - but that was a smart and loyal dog. The dog was being chased by the huge neighbors dog one summer the up our driveway in the country, pretty long. You could see she was scared, but when she got closer to the house and saw our young boys in the yard, she stopped and turned around. She went after that dog to protect the the boys. That was courage! She got beat up pretty good. Eventually as she aged she ended up just about blind and could’t hear well. Had to put her down and that isn’t enjoyable. What a dog.

Both of my dogs are sweet, but if my house gets robbed by intruders, my dogs are going to do Jack shit other than asking for treats and pets.

Same with mine. One of them might bark at the intruder for a couple minutes. The other probably wouldn't even get up from where he was laying unless they had food.

Add another cottontail to the kill list for the year.

In this case, Shelby got the kill and carried it 1.5 miles before I made them "leave it" on the gravel road.

When they got the jackrabbit, Eve carried it four miles the night of the kill and three miles the next night. I threw it in the ditch somewhere else after that.
