So the wife is set on getting a dog, and a friend is selling us a Pyrenees/Lab mix pup. We've got about 4 acres of land in the country that we live on, but the highway is relatively close. Any suggestions on using one of those wireless collar fences? Or any other advice in general. TIA

Garmin training collar and a whistle is what we’ve found works best for every pup we’ve had

I have a lab. She is 9 now but when she was a puppy I had to establish boundaries of where it could go. I live in the country, my house is about 40-50ish yards from the road...so the road was my biggest concern. It kind of felt bad, but I was CONSTANTLY disciplining it when it went down by the road. It worked though. The dog still won't go to the road haha.....unless it's walking with me when I go get the mail. Lots of yelling and hitting it on the nose early on, but it was worth it imo.

I bought a Garmin Delta Sport for my lab pup last year for the very scenario you laid out. You have to establish boundaries early and stay disciplined with them.

We allow our pup to go into the pastures but never toward the direction of the road. Focus on recall training early and often.

my parents had a great pyrenees on their farm, and she was a fantastic dog. Her fox, coyote, and coon kill count was truly impressive. You show that dog the area you want it to patrol and it will do it at night. GP's generally are mellow around people, but anything coming for your livestock is gonna have a fight on its hands because they are powerful and surprisingly fast and agile.

Please post pics and keep us updated my wife wants our next dog to be a Great Pyrenees / Poodle mix.

(I want a GSD or Maremmano)

Even after puppy stage of training getting someone/kennel to take them for vacations and factoring for them on long days away from home is a pain in the ass. One of my current dogs has had 2 surgeries because he likes to eat hair ties. That's a grand each time. Big dog is going to cost a fortune in dog food.

I love dogs though. Order your dog food through Amazon and put it on automatic reorder. Cheaper and easier.

4 months old. She’s starting to figure it out. Wireless fence has worked great. Basically covers the whole yard. Can get a little nippy. But has improved. Girls love her.

I got a new pup a little over a week ago too, would highly recommend place training. Started on this platform deal we keep in the living room but now working to whenever I point at a spot the pup lays there and stays until I say “OK”. Has sure made this puppy thing 100 times easier.
