I honestly don’t know the rules on that. I assume you’re right. I mean how would a school ever know when to start recruiting replacements for guys going in the portal if those guys just have the option to come back whenever they want?

Once you enter the transfer portal, your current school has the right to void or reduce your scholarship and are not obligated to keep you as on the team if you decide to stay. Schools are also able to reduce/eliminate your scholarship for the next academic term once you enter the transfer portal. All of this is at the discretion of the coach and athletic program.

Going into the portal without having an acceptable landing spot in his back pocket was actually a really stupid thing for DC to do - he has no film, he is coming off a significant knee injury, his stock as a recruit gradually fell from 2020 onwards, he played in a smaller school division in LA, and his lowest recorded competitive 100M time (in very limited track competition in HS) was 11.93.
