Dan Patrick: CFP likely going to 14 in 2026

The best case scenario would be them just taking to the top 12/14 overall teams regardless of conference championships, etc., but if the idea is that we have to “protect” conf championship games, the approach described above is the most fair.
Why would that be "best case scenario". Does this year's playoff get more interesting if we dropped Boise State, Arizona State and Clemson and add Alabama, South Carolina and Ole Miss? More SEC teams doesn't make it more interesting to me, just more rematches and less value to the regular season.

If the idea is that the best teams should get the opportunity to play each other and determine a champion, then we should pick the best teams. Thats just one man’s opinion.

I hate that they play the NC game on Monday nights. They need to work something out with the NFL to get the game on a Saturday night.
I almost say screw the NFL and go against them. The NFL and CFB are already going against each other on Thursday nights and then the NFL started to play games on Saturday near the end of the CFB season. I personally don't give a shit about the NFL during the season and would rather watch CFB anyway over a boring NFL game.

I was initially of the opinion that it was a bad thing to give undeserving teams a shot at the title. “FOR THE SANCTITY AND INTEGRITY OF THE GAME!” Now in where @Jim14510 is. More good college football the better. Even if the game turns into a stinker, the conversation around those games filling the week up is great. Putting Bucknel in because they win the Patriot doesn’t hurt college basketball. They just always lose in the first round.

12, 14, 16 teams… actually playing meaningful football instead of crowning the SEC off of hypothetical strength is best for the sport.
Plus most bowl games are meaningless anyways. People want to bitch about a blowout in the playoff, but would you rather watch a bowl game which doesn’t mean anything?

It needs to go back to Saturday night. 10000%

I remember vividly watching all of Nebraska's NC games. None were on a Monday in a regular work week. CFB has no history of playing on Mondays. I've never liked it.

Absolutely. Fuck the NFL. College football used to have amazing Thursday night matchups until the NFL took over Thursday nights.

Playing the NC on a Monday night feels like such a missed opportunity. A Saturday night game would be so much better—it’s more convenient for fans and would likely bring in much more business for local bar owners. Monday night just doesn’t have the same energy, especially with a full workweek ahead, leaving little reason for people to gather and enjoy the game.

I'd even rather have it on a Friday night over Monday.

What is this guy smoking? Also, no Huskers in next 10 years? Fucktwad.

"It's realistic to project Georgia winning two of the next 10 national championships. That would tie with Texas for most over that stretch and give the SEC half of the titles over the next decade. Finally — a Big 12 team bucks the trend of the league being one-and-done in the playoff makes the national championship game. And for the first time in program history, it's UCF. Scott Frost will be 59 years old and finishing his ninth season with the Knights since his return in 2024. Buy stock in UCF, who's going to be a threat in the Big 12 moving forward with the right guy in charge post-Gus Malzahn."

TBH if I was a national writer I probably wouldn't put Nebraska in the CFP in the next 10 yrs. I'd make them show me first. I'd be so tired of being wrong about every time Nebraska is back... I'd pick a 7-5 now every yr until they prove me wrong.

The Frost thing is interesting. I would say to not buy stock in UCF as the Big 12 now will be a different battle than the AAC back in 2016. But the Simulation says Frost will be coach of the year and in the CFP by 2027.

That’s fair.

Used to be Friday night was High School Football, Saturday was CFB and Sunday/Monday was NFL. Now there are college AND NFL games on random damned nights all week it seems.

I get network folks wanting more singular exposure for the championship games vs head to head with the NFL, but I’d like to see both the Super Bowl and CFB Championship game on Saturday night.

I don’t doubt we make the CFP in the next decade, but in typical Nebraska fashion, we’ll miss due to a late 4th quarter one score loss on 7 or 8 occasions.

On Frost, I’m pretty interested to see how that goes. The Big 12 is definitely a step up from the AAC he executed UCF’s turnaround in, but it’s not a great conference. Their ’25 schedule looks like 6-7 wins is attainable. Can’t find jack on their ’26 schedule though.
