Quick video from Dan Patrick in the future of the CFP. This is from his source in CFB w knowledge of these things (his words).

Cliffs:
  • Expect CFP to go to 14 teams in 2026
  • Top 2 seeds would get a bye
  • Next round is the bowls so top 2 teams would not play a home game
  • At 14, talk of higher seeds selecting their 1sr round opponents (which would theoretically fix the seeding problems in this yr's CFP)
  • Expect CFP to go to 16 teams in 2032
  • 2032 is when current TV deals expire, so larger CFP field will be a part of the next contract negotiations

Even the most humble and respectful coach will be giving the other team bulletin board material by picking their opponent. (Obviously you are picking whoever you think is the easiest win).
I think it's a terrible idea. I give that 0.00% chance of happening.

I honestly can't even believe Dan went forward with that info. He must be losing it in his old age.

There's 0% chance of that happening for exactly the reason you stated. It's a really dumb idea. You can just have a CFP committee do seedings and re-seedings if necessary and it accomplishes the same goal. You'd have endless bulletin board material if you did it the other way. It'd be so dumb. The dumb press comments before every game "they disrespected us." It would get so fucking tiresome every year.

The one thing I like is the conference champions getting in. It's the the one thing the committee can't control and have to abide by. I'm somewhat ok with tweeking where they are seeded, but not to the committee's favor. Needs to almost be a black and white formula and not too much intervention by the committee.

I kind of like the conference champions getting the bye.

Gives the conference championships some meaning and allows for some potential chaos.
I agree.

The one issue I'm wondering about if these bye teams are mad about missing out on the home gate for 1 extra game.

I'm guessing that each major CFB team generates like $7m per home game (gross revenue). I could see Ohio State getting pissed off about missing that every year while, Penn St gets it.

These programs are $$$ whores. They don't like missing out on any money that their competitors are getting.

Do the NY6 bowls offer larger payouts? I’m not sure how revenue is shared when the Sugar Bowl is played in New Orleans for instance.

Obviously a home game might pay more, just curious if it’s comparable at all.

$7 million home game vs $7.5 million guaranteed Sugar Bowl appearance 🤷

I'm sure it probably does. But if you're Penn St, you hit a mini lotto bc you got both an extra home gate PLUS a NY6 bowl. It turned out very well for them.

I don't know if OSU has a problem with it, I'm just speculating. Teams that had the better seeds actually got lower benefits than some of the lower seeded teams.

CFB is the king of people feeling slighted. So my guess is someone will bring this up if it's a thing.

Can't imagine it's too far off.

I don't mind the picking your opponent part.

$4 million for each of the 8 teams that makes the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals

Additionally, each team who participates in the College Football Playoff receives $3 million to cover expenses for each round.

So 7 million for bowl game.

And no expenses like staff, utilities, etc for a home game.

Isn't some of that shared with their conference? Or is that separate money?
