‘Slowly opens old leather bound book’

Anyone remember the Halloween Blizzard of ‘97? I believe it started on a Friday night, and Dean Wysoki was called in for an emergency weather bulletin! He was attending a wedding at the time, so he did the weather in a cheap tux rental.

The wind and snow were brutal that night, and many trees were lost.

I remember my mom trying and failing to fit my costume over my coat and snow pants as a young tot and having the snow come up all the way to my nips

That was a great week to be in Lincoln though. Classes shut down but parties were a plenty. I'm not sure I had a drunker week in my life.

Oh, yea. I went down to Bellevue to pick up a buddy to go Pheasant hunting that morning. We were standing in his driveway when we heard this "creaking" sound which turned into a "groan" ... then a crash. We turned and noted that 1/2 of his neighbor's tree had just landed in the driveway. I looked at Buck and said, "If we're gonna go, we gotta go NOW!"

Made it down to Virginia, NE where there was hardly any snow. Slayed birds. Drank a couple of celebratory beers at Terry's Place and came home. His wife was hella pissed as most of the trees in his neighborhood dropped - including his - and his wife was trapped inside the garage. A couple hours of chainsawing later, we quoted Martin Luther King, Jr. "Free at last, Free at last...". She was not amused. They later divorced.

There was a rumor that if they had to call off another day of school, then we would not be eligible to play football that week. And that was the reason why they had school on Thursday (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were cancelled). (Probably total bs)

I don't remember hearing that one. My place was out of power all week.

My now ex-wife and I had an apartment across 70th Street from East at the time. We lost power and my Dad ended up coming to get us in his 4x4. This shows how old I am... I kept calling our land line to see if the answering machine would pick up. That was the only way I would know that power was back on at our apartment.

Fast forward to yesterday and I'm taking the dogs on a walk around 6 a.m. and my phone buzzes with a notification letting me know that there's a power outage at the house, giving me a map of the area that's impacted, and then notifications 30 minutes later when power had been restored.
