People hate on LA, then they get to Newport, Laguna, Dana Point and realize it’s one of the nicest places in the country. I’d move there this second

I did a stint out in Irvine at my old job. It was definitely cool for a short term thing, but I definitely couldn't live there year round. Between the cost of living and the traffic on the 5 and 405, I'd want to put a bullet in my brain. 10 at freaking night and the damn thing is backed up. Never mind what happens when it rains and they all treat it like they're driving on black ice or something...

Was never really worried about Kentucky… Danny has always viewed UConn as a dream job and has stated on the record he wasn’t leaving for another college job

The Lakers are different. They are THE premier brand in hoops… even more so than the Knicks. That has to be insanely appealing and he’s always said he wanted to coach in the NBA. The opportunity to coach LeBron James has got to be pretty appealing and it’s been said they view him as a Spoelstra type where they’d want to keep him for the long term to implement his player development and training approaches. Danny has also said he doesn’t want to coach into his mid to late sixties and he’s 51.. this is probably as good of a time as any to take that next challenge, despite the fact that UConn is loaded yet again for 2024-25.

Will he do it? I don’t know. I do know that I, along with most sane people, would take the Lakers job. But Danny isn’t a sane person so who knows? His dad never coached outside of high school despite having the chance to his entire career. Maybe Danny will do the same in college hoops. The Lakers also tried to get Kevin Ollie once he won with UConn in 2014 and KO stayed. It’s not entirely crazy he would look at the situation with LeBron, Bronny, and aging and unhealthy roster with insane coaching turnover and pass. But he will be in the NBA in the next 3-5 years even if he says no to this.

As for UConn, they’ll promote Kimani Young or Luke Murray and keep rolling. The last 3 coaches have won national titles and two of those three have won multiple. We will be fine, even if we don’t ever repeat national championships again (which nobody else does either).

Rich Paul really wants you all to know LeBron isn't involved with this because he's such a nice guy who wants to let the Lakers take the long view

Is it a done deal? GBR

Dan and his wife are meeting in person with the Lakers owner, GM and brass tomorrow. The fact that the Hurley's are flying out is a pretty good tell that they are quite serious.

I think the Lakers are throwing the bag at Hurley, 12 mil a year for 8 years is a number making the insider rounds. 105 mil for 8 years, which is over 13 mil a year.

The Lakers are usually very cheap where they should be spending elite $ for elite people. They lost Ty Lue over an extra year that Lue wanted on his contact - silly stuff to lose a top 5 HC over. This time around, it seems they may have realized they need a top notch coach. Even NBA people/coaches/players think Hurley is elite and an innovator. Basically the opposite of the kinds of coaches the Lakers have hired most of the time. Obviously Phil Jackson was elite - but that was pushing on 15 years ago since he coached. But in todays game, Phil has long been behind the times, even if he were younger or healthy.

From what I can tell from my contact, tomorrow is a huge day for Hurley and the Lakers. There are always moving parts - like, will Hurley get to pick his own assistant staff (quite important)? Can he pick or hire other staffers? Lakers, for all their glitz, are still a family run outfit, which really hurts them quite often, as they don't have a billionaire owner who can spend any amount just because. They have more of an actual budget, which most would find suprising to hear. Cronyism, infighting, owners or family or their friends all vying for power and their say in things are constant issues in the Org. But despite all of that, they are still the crown jewel of NBA franchises.

Lakers should just hire elite managment and let that management take over. They seem to realize they need to nail this head coach hire. I mean, JJ Redick is obviously BBall smart... but has never coached. Hurley is basically Redick in smarts (actually most likely better), but extremely well proven to be one of the top coaches and minds at any level of basketball.

My gut is that this deal gets done. There are many things lining up for it IMO. Timing for Hurley to make the jump to the NBA a big one. A team that has built in advantages another. But until it is done, it isn't. Most likely we will know soon.

Yeah the key would be living and working somewhere like Newport Beach. Like within walking distance.

No surprise. Lakers don't have FYOU money like most teams billioaire owners. But still, you gotta come in with more than 6yrs/70 mil. Lakers went cheap again. They will regret it.
The Lakers think they're still THE Lakers. They're not.

Since Dr Jerry Buss passed, and Dr Buss' kids took over, things went to shit. They are a poorly run sports Org from the management to the owners.

But they are still the biggest draw in the NBA. In a couple years, when their team has lost it's current top players, Lakers will take a 5ish year stroll as a lottery team. But right now, as far as eyeballs and interest in the team - Lakers still have that cache.

Probably for the best, but would have been interesting to see. I didn't see any way that Hurley's coaching style would fit with NBA players.
