Dan and his wife are meeting in person with the Lakers owner, GM and brass tomorrow. The fact that the Hurley's are flying out is a pretty good tell that they are quite serious.
I think the Lakers are throwing the bag at Hurley, 12 mil a year for 8 years is a number making the insider rounds. 105 mil for 8 years, which is over 13 mil a year.
The Lakers are usually very cheap where they should be spending elite $ for elite people. They lost Ty Lue over an extra year that Lue wanted on his contact - silly stuff to lose a top 5 HC over. This time around, it seems they may have realized they need a top notch coach. Even NBA people/coaches/players think Hurley is elite and an innovator. Basically the opposite of the kinds of coaches the Lakers have hired most of the time. Obviously Phil Jackson was elite - but that was pushing on 15 years ago since he coached. But in todays game, Phil has long been behind the times, even if he were younger or healthy.
From what I can tell from my contact, tomorrow is a huge day for Hurley and the Lakers. There are always moving parts - like, will Hurley get to pick his own assistant staff (quite important)? Can he pick or hire other staffers? Lakers, for all their glitz, are still a family run outfit, which really hurts them quite often, as they don't have a billionaire owner who can spend any amount just because. They have more of an actual budget, which most would find suprising to hear. Cronyism, infighting, owners or family or their friends all vying for power and their say in things are constant issues in the Org. But despite all of that, they are still the crown jewel of NBA franchises.
Lakers should just hire elite managment and let that management take over. They seem to realize they need to nail this head coach hire. I mean, JJ Redick is obviously BBall smart... but has never coached. Hurley is basically Redick in smarts (actually most likely better), but extremely well proven to be one of the top coaches and minds at any level of basketball.
My gut is that this deal gets done. There are many things lining up for it IMO. Timing for Hurley to make the jump to the NBA a big one. A team that has built in advantages another. But until it is done, it isn't. Most likely we will know soon.
