Bill Self?

You might have rented from my brother and/or one of his business partners. They own all kinds of rentals around those bars to limit noise and other complaints. Bought them and put that in the Leases. Nobbie, who owns The Wheel, owns a building right across from the Hawk. It has 1 bedroom apartments which is unusual in that area.
Our landlord was JD. Current owner of The Hawk and also the landlord of a bunch of properties in that area. Very familiar with Nobbie though, given he was around a lot and also the boss of a handful of my buddies while they were door guys / bartenders at The Wheel.

JD is my brother's business partner along with John in the Hawk, plus many real estate projects. 3 owners of the Hawk: JD, Tom & John. They also have a variety of businesses/LLC's that own rental properties around Lawrence. Nobbie is involved in many of their real estate deals, as is Hatfield and a few others. Nobbie & my brother bought a fixer upper down here at the Lake that they are going to rent out. Lawrence is a small world. It feels like half of Lawrence has stayed at either my house in Vail or down at the Lake. Revolving door of Jayhawks coming through here. Good peeps.

JD was great to us despite the many headaches we probably caused him haha. To come full circle, I was skiing Vail last weekend. A lot of former Jayhawks make the transition from Lawrence to Denver it seems (myself included).

The Hawk is still the Hawk. When business slowed down in the 90's or early 2000's they changed the name to The O Street and then the 19th Amendment for a year or 2 but went back to the Hawk and have kept it. Technically it is The Jayhawk Cafe but they call it The Hawk. They have added to it over the years as now they also have 2 bars downstairs (The Boom Boom Room & Martini Room) plus added the beer garden out back. It's all the Hawk but they have named the rooms. They will be working on a new bar next door soon. Finally got approval from the city. Gonna tear down a building/house they own next door to build a new bar there.
The boom boom room takes souls.

my brother in law was a bouncer at the Hawk circa 2005-2007..somewhere around there. He's got some stories.
I remember those days at The Hawk. Shit got crazy and all of his stories are probably true. I will say that it was even wilder behind the scenes in the 90's and early 2000's. So he worked mainly for John H at the Hawk that time period. The owners rotated who actively runs it. So he was also probably there when we brought the Sidetrack Band in from Lincoln for the Husker Games. We'd turn the Hawk into a Nebraska Bar. Would be their busiest weekend of the year and so much fun. The first year they did that we packed the place with Husker Fans. Literally almost a full house at 11 am before the game. I had a group of about 60 posters from the Red Sea Scrolls board there.

I'm not kidding, the 6 Degrees Game has been the running joke about me with my friends for a long time. We've literally played that game before. Being in the music industry while living in Vail really got me tight with a diverse group of powerful people. And scary as it is I have a couple friends who have far more connections than me. Seems like they know powerful people everywhere. We all help each other out.

For some dumbass reason I just have a variety of connections all over the place. Stops in Vail, Denver, Phoenix & Chicago introduced me to more people. Just dumb luck that my brother is one of the owners of the Hawk and other Lawrence businesses. I've been running with his Lawrence friends for decades hence being dialed in for everything KU.

You treat people the right way plus surround yourself with highly motivated positive people and it is a recipe for people wanting to know you. If they trust you and know you have their back then you are in. And my friends know if they need anything anywhere I will help them out.

I've never been there. Normally find myself hanging at The Hawk, Leroys, Clyde's, Jeffersons, Shinango or The Wheel when I'm back in Lawrence. Basically roll around with my brother & his friends to the places they own or hang out at.
Shenago Lounge is my jam. I used to love going there when I lived in Lawrence. My usual spots were also Jeffersons, Johnnys West, and then Set em up Jacks on the east side when I lived out there. Lot of great sports bars in that town. I now live in Columbia and there isn't a sports bar to be found in this goddamn town.

Sitting out a year and then coaching Nebrasketball.
