Big news on the injury front

Yeah I thought Nixon was going to be one of the top 2 or 3 receivers this year. He has great hands, solid speed and runs crisp routes.

It’s up to the coaching staff to figure out ways to get these playmakers up to speed. No one on the other side of the ball is scared of Falck/Liewer.
The narrative that the our best athletes arent playing at WR bc they cant learn the playbook is so stupid. Oklahoma will have 4 freshman WRs running circles around our defense on Saturday.

I thought he was going to be the backup to Toure. So I was expecting him to be in the 5/6 range. He is still young, but I really like him.

The lack of playbook knowledge is throwing me for a loop.

Literally almost every highly ranked WR we sign ends up in the doghouse. We never hear why, but "not know the playbook well enough" is usually the excuse.

Get the talent on the field. Period. Yes, they need to be able to execute the plays properly, but if pretty much ALL of your highly ranked WR's can never learn the playbook well enough... maybe it isn't the players fault.

We just can't win enough if we don't play our most talented players. Get it done, or be out of a job, coaching staff.

And then every time there's an interception because the WR ran the wrong route and wasn't where the QB expected him to be, you'll bitch about how Martinez should be benched and Verduzco should be fired, instead of blaming the receiver who actually made the fuck-up.

I think most of Martinez issues lie with Martinez. He's missed so many open receivers down the field the last few years. And by missed, I don't necessarily mean he made a bad throw, more that he either doesn't see them open or if he does he is scared to throw the pass. Some of this is on the O Line for sure, they haven't protected well and AM gets skittish anticipating pressure with O Line breakdowns.

As far as Brown or Nixon running the wrong route causing an INT or incompletion - if they get to play and it happens, then I will give rightful blame where it lies. I think both guys are talented and would make our receiving corp more potent if they got to play regularly.

BTW - Mario sucks. He needs to be fired.

Ya I know nothing about college playbooks or the system they utilize to relay the playcall but there’s a point where ya gotta simplify shit if the talent can’t get on the field. If ya got 1 or 2 dense kids that can’t figure it out/put in the effort to memorize it, I get it, but this bs seems to effect half the guys they bring in.

AM & Liewer/Falck/whatever other walk-ons they put in, their understanding of the playbook doesn’t translate to faster execution or any kind of attack we can depend on. Simplifying may help AM if the playbook is a reason he seems to process things slowly.

You really need to keep in mind just how goddamn much attrition we've had at WR. We weren't supposed to need to push guys like Brown and Nixon into action right now before they're ready - we were supposed to have a deep and experienced core of upperclassmen lighting things up while those guys are still learning the playbook.

Tyjon Lindsey, Jaevon McQuitty, and Keyshawn Johnson Jr were all 4* WRs in Riley's last class who bailed. They would all still have eligibility remaining this year, as would Spielman.

The WRs in Frost's first few classes haven't fared any better. Jaron Woodyard, Darien Chase, Demariyon Houston, Jamie Nance, Marcus Flemming - all guys who were 4* WR recruits or damn near it who have bailed. Wan'dale was our highest-rated recruit in some time, but without any other decent WRs last year it was easy for opposing defenses to key on him. And of course, now he's gone.

That's no less than ten potential star WRs who should be playing for us right now, but aren't. TEN! Imagine that depth chart!

But instead, we're stuck with guys like you bitching about how Brown and Nixon aren't ready to play yet...

Lotta words. Succinctly, Brown and Nixon should be playing more. And Fleming was talented, but didn't get to play much either. At some point you stop blaming so much on the players, and look a the coaches, specifically the Head Coach.

Most of the other guys you mentioned washed out, mostly on their own, but they weren't bought in to a discombobulated team.

I don’t really blame Frost for Fleming. By all accounts that kid was a bit of a piece of shit. It’s like blaming the coaches for Mo Washington not being here anymore.

Betts, Nixon, Brown, etc. I can agree with.

How long does it take to understand the playboy?

Brown, Nixon, and Betts have all been here longer than a year.

The weird thing is that Betts is really the only of the 3 to see the field much and he likely wouldn’t have qualified if not for COVID.

I don't know anything about Fleming and what kind of person he was or any off field things regarding him.

He showed flashes of talent in his limited playing time in 2019. I think the kid is talented.

Mo Wash is on Mo Wash. He was given a multitude of chances, and apparently barely went to class, barely worked on S&C, was selfish and about himself more than the team. Super talented and that showed on the field, but the other stuff he didn't want to follow the rules even though he got many extra chances. Other players wouldn't get those chances. Then the final nail - his legal situation - sunk it for sure.

Betts, Nixon and Brown - all seem talented and should be getting lots of snaps. Brown had shoulder problems apparently, and maybe Nixon was banged up some too in camp (not sure). Betts has gotten an increased role until he got hurt early last game, some of that because Martin was hurt and out the last two games, but Betts seemed to be on the rise.

I just want to see the more talented players play in games. We have a large enough sample size on Liewer and Falk. Not saying they are bad, but they don't do much either way. We need more explosive play makers at WR for this offense to work better. I don't think keeping guys like Betts, Nixon and Brown on the sideline is helping us, I do think playing them more would help us.

But Nixon and Brown haven't gotten much chance to play, so limited sample size to go off of. We have some mop up game film where they did good things, and the spring game. They seem more talented overall than guys who are playing over them.
