Assistant Coach Hires - Different Perspective

I think that is the most likely scenario.

HC/QB - Frost
RB - Brown
OC/WR - ???
OL - ???
ST - Snyder
The other scenario I could see...

OC/QB
RB- Brown
WR/TE- Beckton
TE/Special teams - Snyder
OL -

Basically have your TEs work with the WRs on route running and passing time. Then have Snyder work with them with the OL when they are working on blocking. You also have a GA who has a WR background who I know they are high on.

The GA is the former Oregon WR that stopped that HS shooting right?

My biggest issue is with all of this is the “will AM come back”, “Smothers might be good in an option offense” and transfer portal QB talk. If I’m an OC worth a shit, I’m only coming here on a one year trail basis if I get to choose who runs the offense I’m calling. If we find out AM is coming back before an OC is announced, it’s just more of the same shit.

I wouldn’t completely write off Smothers passing ability at this point. I mean he was coached, maybe ‘coached’ is overstating in this instance, by Verduzco the last 2 years. Give the kid an offseason to get some real training from an actual QB coach. He’ll probably be able to find himself a personal QB coach he can visit this spring and summer and work on mechanics/arm strength. I think he has adequate potential just needs to develop chemistry with the WR’s, add some arm strength/overall weight, and learn from a real QB guru.

I’m not saying he’s the long term answer and Frost most definitely needs to find another QB for the sake of competition via the portal, but Smothers was more then serviceable against Cockeye. If he has a good offseason I could definitely see him as the starter depending upon who Frost can lure through the portal. I’m personally not ready to completely give up on Smothers for next season just yet. I’m hoping all they need to find is a quality starter for next year and then hopefully Haarberg is ready to take the reigns

Frost already said he intends to transition to more of a CEO role, and probably won't take over a position coach job. So unless he's changed his mind on that, we'll probably still have a dedicated QB coach.

Now that the season is over I wonder how long until we hear something

Looking at some stats, Kent State and North Texas are the #3 and #4 rushing offenses in the country. They're also #106 and #102 for red zone TD percentage. A lot of people equate having a run-heavy offense with being able to easily punch it into the end zone when you're there, but clearly that's not necessarily the case.
