I’m so on the damn fence with this.
1) we gotta play with the big boys. Hell the medium boys
2) what the hell else can we do after getting the commitment, acceptable paper work in hand, and then an 11th hour “psych” - I’m not sure what we are supposed to do if we aren’t given the chance
3) and if they gave us a chance to match and we said “piss off” that’s one - but also, there has to be SOME responsibility here. If he’s demanding sorsby/Leavitt money after agreeing to 2/5 of that, that’s pretty wild. We are literally promoting extortion at that point
The answer can’t be “cave to every demand a 20 year old makes”. You don’t negotiate with terrorists, and this is fucking TERRORIST behavior

Unless we kill it the rest of the way in the portal Matt is doomed. Might be doomed even if we somehow do really well but the resistance to the status quo is admitting that the ones who make the $$$ decisions either have zero faith in Rhule or don't give any fucks about being competetive. The real issue at hand is the football team still makes money because of the loyal (easily bilked) fan base. If becoming a top ten team was needed to make the program viable from a financial standpoint it would happen. Eventually though the bulk of the dreamers who were alive and older than 8 years old in 1999 will be either dead or broken in the not so distant future. Which ultimately means I have no hope of seeing a good football team fielded by the Huskers.
Re-bolded - the commitment without a signature is nothing. This entire situation STUNK from the beginning. Wednesday visit date setup, was supposedly “done” before the portal even opened yet nothing came out until late yesterday… just odd all around
Regarding the “you can’t cave into every demand a 20 year old makes” - cool. Thats how coaches get fired. There is no salary cap. Not spending the money doesn’t mean we get a bunch of other good players, it just means we don’t get the guys we want and instead get random floatsam to be filler

Was odd he wasn’t visiting until Wednesday and hadn’t signed imo. Particularly when we should’ve already had this worked out ready to sign day 1 as we have an entire operation setup to contact agents etc.
And a 2 million dollar qb saying “now it’s 5” is just trying to fuck us until we can’t walk

We are a mediocre football team. We have run a mediocre offense for 3 seasons that, a QB’s agent might reasonably conclude, severely diminished the prospects of a celebrated 5-star.
We chose to stand pat on that offense and assumed everyone would buy into the idea that what it has looked like for the year plus Dana was in charge was not what it really was.
It’s a miracle we got Minchey to commit in the first place and why a lot of us were excited to have him.
Making the choice to go play for the hottest offensive mind not at Indiana instead of the 20 points a game struggle at NU is a rational choice.
We thought we got lucky. But we didn’t.

We can make all the excuses in the world and rationalize it however we want. Reality is we got beat for talent that we desperately need and may not have a similar replacement option for. That’s why Rhule gets $12mm a year to execute.
I get it. I fucking get it. Which is why I’m so torn. Like 75/25 pissed at Rhule vs just the game…
My biggest frustration is the lack of contingency. Identify your top 3, approach them all with a strong number and first to sign gets it. Take the flip out of the equation
But I do disagree with the “there is no salary cap, pay whatever” when you know you have a number, that’s YOUR salary cap. And every guy has a number at which you say “naw”. The fact we put ourselves in position to have this happen is the most frustrating - get the damn signature. And if 40 mil ain’t cutting it, then you gotta find a different way to skin the cat.
But it’s revisionist to say this stunk the whole time. He was our shining example of “we are tampering like everyone else - this was a done deal when the portal opened.” So we can’t swing the pendulum back and say “SEEE! We knew it all along, we weren’t ready”
Again - 75 pissed at Rhule so don’t hear this shit as a cop out for him.
