Earlier this week, On3’s Steve Wiltfong and I reported that Michigan and Nebraska were battling for one of the top transfer offensive tackles in the portal, New Mexico State’s Shiyazh Pete. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Wolverines and Cornhuskers appear to have taken a backseat to an SEC program, sources tell On3.
A source tells On3 that Kentucky, which previously hosted Pete on a visit, is trending to land one of the top offensive tackles available. He was in Lexington earlier this month, and reviews were strong coming out of the trip. He also visited Vanderbilt, with his preexisting relationship with former NMSU head coach Jerry Kill a tie to the Commodores.
Along with the Wildcats trending, New Mexico State remains an option for Pete, sources tell On3. While the NIL offer would be less than the SEC or Big Ten, he is open to returning and continuing to develop with the Aggies.
The veteran played over 1,800 snaps for the Aggies over three seasons with all of them occurring at left tackle. The 6-foot-8, 320-pound offensive lineman was a 2023 All-Conference USA first-team selection, while in 2024, he didn’t play until Week 8 of the season, starting the Aggies’ final six games at left tackle.
In 2024, he allowed just five QB pressures on 193 pass-blocking plays — two sacks and three hurries. He carried an overall grade of 72.2 on PFF during the 2024 season. In 443 pass-blocking situations in 2023, he allowed three sacks, five quarterback hits and 23 hurries.
Kentucky needs a left tackle with Marques Cox’s departure, which Pete could potentially fill. Michigan and Nebraska have worked to build their offensive lines through the portal in recent weeks, but neither appears to be in pole position to land Pete on Wednesday night.
