2024-25 Portal SZN Thread

On3 is using "fuzzy math."

Nebraska has 23 portal rated 3-stars leaving. 18 of those transfers are leaving because they never saw the field.

Nebraska has 13 portal rated 3-stars arriving.

So according to On3's formula, Nebraska got worse by a net of negative 10 three star players, while only gaining one extra 4 star player.

Everyone ready to laugh incessantly?

Jacob Hood is a considered a 3-Star ranked 86 Transfer loss for Nebraska. According to On3, that ranking cancels out Jaylen George from ETSU who has started 27 games before turning 20 years-old and was a 2-Time All SoCon Defensive Player.

Stefon Thompson is considered a 3-star ranked 87 transfer loss for Nebraska. His ranking cancels out Marques Watson-Trent, the Sun Belt Player of the Year.
It also penalizes teams who carry larger rosters, unless there’s some weight applied that we’re not seeing.

Some of these guys aren’t even on the roster if the same limits were imposed last season.

Gilbert and Safeeullah weren’t even with the team this season.

My hot take is that Haarberg will be what he hoped Fidone would be. Haarberg is that kind of athlete.
I had a ginormous ceiling for Fidone when he comitted. Like future 1st round pick. I think I predicted Fidone as all conference before the season. Don't think Haarberg will be that.

So depends how delusional your expectations were.

I agree though that Haarberg could end up being a very solid TE. I'm also optimistic Markway comes back from injury without any issues and is very solid as well. I also dont see a significant difference between Boerk and Lindenmeier. I'm also clearly terrible at predicting TE talent.

We’ll have to wait another season before we see how Haarberg performs at te

Haarberg is a great athlete. There is no debating that.

What I haven’t seen is a natural ball carrier or someone who understands how to use their body in space, like a good receiver or tight end does. That’s not a knock on Haarberg, since that’s not been asked of him previously. It is an extremely rare athlete who can switch positions or sports and become dominant at this level.

He has speed, strength and a shit ton of ‘want to’. I like those things. I’d be happy with him being a good TE. He’s got a lot to learn in that role.

Michigan Wolverines football has expressed interest in Troy offensive lineman transfer Daniel King, according to a source. King entered the NCAA transfer portal Wednesday (Jan. 15).

Other schools that have reached out to King in the early stages of his recruitment are TCU, Indiana, Mississippi State, UNC, NC State and Rutgers.

The 6-foot-5, 340-pounder has one season of college football remaining, due to the NCAA granting a waiver to all players who played JUCO, giving them another season of eligibility. King began his career at Georgia Military College (2021), before spending the last three seasons at Troy (2022-24).

King is the No. 69 overall player and eighth-best offensive tackle in the NCAA transfer portal, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. When filtering for only available players, King checks in first among offensive linemen and fifth overall.

Over the last three seasons at Troy, King has appeared in and started 40 games — 34 at right guard and six at right tackle. He’s logged 2,642 offensive snaps over the last three years.

He opened all 12 contests in 2024, six at right guard and six at right tackle. He was named second-team All-Sun Belt, posting a 74.6 overall PFF rating that ranked 49th among Group of Five offensive linemen. He allowed 11 pressures and 1 sack in pass protection. Seven of those pressures and 1 of the sacks came when he was at tackle.

“We have an experienced center [Eli Russ] and an experienced guard in Daniel King and they are both great and starting to lead that group for us upfront,” Troy Coach Gerad Parker said before the season.

A second-team All-Sun Belt selection in 2023, King started all 14 games at right guard. He registered a 69.4 overall PFF rating with 15 pressures and 5 sacks given up.

The Cairo, Ga., native started 12 contests at right guard in 2022, his first season at Troy. He allowed 13 pressures and 2 sacks in pass protection; he didn’t allow a sack in the final six games of the year.

King spent the 2021 campaign at the JUCO level with Georgia Military. He played high school football at Cairo (Ga.) High, where he was an unranked recruit.

Michigan has added 13 transfer commitments ahead of the 2025 season, including two offensive linemen in Cal Poly’s Brady Norton and Ferris State’s Lawrence Hattar.

Hattar is a guard, having helped Ferris State win the national championship this past season, while Norton has experience at both guard and tackle. The Wolverines have three returning starters on the offensive line in graduate center Greg Crippen, graduate guard Giovanni El-Hadi and junior tackle Evan Link.

The others portal OTs Michigan contacted today (see story on King above)

*** As our Clayton Sayfie first reported, Michigan has made contact with Troy transfer Daniel King, On3’s top available offensive tackle in the portal. King arrived at Troy shortly after the departure of Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, but there is still some familiarity there. Remember, Lindsey recruited King’s home state of Georgia hard and was once a high school coach there. King just entered the portal today, so it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next few days. He should have plenty of suitors. King, however, isn’t the only portal offensive lineman Michigan is taking a closer look at…

*** The Wolverines have also been in contact with Arizona offensive tackle transfer Leif Magnuson, who, like King, has one year of eligibility remaining. Magnuson entered the portal a couple of weeks ago and is ranked as the third best remaining offensive tackle, per On3. While Magnuson is listed as a tackle, he also has plenty of experience at guard. In fact, he started five games at right guard in 2023 and started there the first two games of this season before being ruled out the rest of the year with concussions. Magnuson has been very quiet since entering the portal, so it will be interesting to see what schools become contenders. Overall, Magnuson is ranked as the No. 505 player in the portal.

Hard to disagree with any of those thoughts. And I don’t want to make it seem like I think he’ll be better than Fidone, but I don’t think that bar is terribly high. The one thing I think he has going for him over Fidone is that while he isn’t great at changing direction, he doesn’t take take 5 strides to be able to do it like Fidone did. It became painfully evident that he just isn’t confident to make quick and sharp cuts, and when he caught the ball, that was often the difference in him picking up extra yards.
It’s impossible to know what he’ll do, but he is more athletic than 2024 Fidone.
