2024-25 Nebraska Football Roster Attrition + Graduation

Per Dean and Sip on today’s podcast: Singleton *might* come back.

Ran out of eligibility. But then the NCAA took away rules, so here we are.
The NCAA did not take away rules - the courts are saying their rules aren't legal. That's pretty much what happened here - the NCAA was enjoined from enforcing the rule that says a year of Juco uses a year of NCAA eligibility by a federal district judge.

It was tongue-in-cheek.

Don't forget about ... Mac Markway

The Husker tight end who transferred in last August is eager to get back out there in 2025 after injury.

Luke Lindenmeyer became a big hit with fans as the season wound down. Heinrich Haarberg is moving there full time and looks like he'll like to hit. And notable departures include Thomas Fidone and Nate Boerkircher. Certainly Carter Nelson is someone who could fit more into that tight end spot by the fall of 2025 too.

Plenty of interesting things listed above.

OK, now don't forget about Mac Markway.

The former four-star recruit started his career at LSU, transferred to Nebraska last August, then suffered an ACL injury just as he was getting started.

Having spent the fall rehabbing, he's still in the Husker program and seemingly amped for what 2025 can bring. "Coming for a vengeance in 25! Will make every #BigRed Fan swell with pride!" he posted Saturday on X.

Husker head coach Matt Rhule was excited about Markway's arrival.

"Mac did all that on his own," Rhule said late last August. "He didn't go in the portal, so you can't recruit him. He literally went through the whole admissions process on his own. Talking to him the other day, he came up here and did a school tour, similar to the one I took my son on. We didn't have any contact with him."

It's worth reminding of Markway too as the Huskers continue to make more inroads in recruiting the St. Louis and Kansas City areas.

A St. Louis native, he played for the highly regarded De Smet Jesuit program and was ranked the No. 9 tight end in the country by 247Sports. He was also the No. 242 player in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports composite.

Markway appeared in 12 games as a freshman at LSU, making three catches for 16 yards and catching a touchdown pass. He also was a regular on LSU's kickoff return units as a blocker.

In his first spring at LSU as an early enrollee, Tigers coach Brian Kelly included Markway among those making the right impression early, saying, "I think that their play this spring has been more than we expected. I think we're excited about what that can do and they're most likely going to be able to help us in the fall."

The 6-4, 260-pound Markway will still have three years to play for the Huskers.

"He's eligible, but he hasn't been here," Rhule said upon his arrival in the fall. "There's been a new interpretation from the NCAA that you can do that, but I was surprised to be quite honest with you. A great surprise."

Unfortunately, Markway suffered that ACL in just his third practice in Lincoln, which kept him from competing. But he should still have three years of eligibility.

Rhule added at that time that a lot of players had been excited about Nebraska since Dylan Raiola signed. "The quarterback room is going to be strong here for awhile."

Besides the name mentioned, other known tight ends on the roster right now include sophomore Cayden Echternach, as well as redshirt freshmen Danny King, Ian Flynt, Eric Ingwerson and Connor Schutt. Certainly Janiran Bonner is a hybrid type player who can take on some of those position's responsibilities too. Obviously we'll see how it all shakes out as the roster trims its way to the required fall by next August.

But Holgorsen showed in his four games as Nebraska offensive coordinator how important this position group will be to his operation. He said it too.

"We're not turning this into an Air Raid, four-wideout program. That's not going to happen. So these tight ends are important," Holgorsen said in December. "There's probably two or three other ones that got a whole bunch of reps over the last nine practices that excite me, that are all young and are going to keep getting better and better."

For Markway, it's a tough injury to come back from. But certainly tank is fueled up to make an imprint when returning to the field.
