You might be right but you’re reading waaaayyy too much into post practice comments. Rhule probably has no idea how good/bad the teams going to be at this point of fall camp.

Keep in mind, I still think Nebraska will go 6-6 this year. But I consider last year's team 6-6 level (NW, GS game were easy wins that SF/EC f'd up).

So if go from 6-6 to 6-6 it's kind of a disappointment in my mind. Especially with this year's schedule.

Again I actually think Rhule might have initially thought we had an 8-4 ceiling back in the spring and summer but fall camp shows are real self (we have head cases). PLUS I think the depth hits home. You lose a starting WR - or even a Maverick Noonan, it hits home that we're very thin. And we'll have tons more injuries between now and 9/30 - so OCT & NOV could be an adventure.

5-7 or 6-6 is reasonable for a team w this depth. Which is a shame bc this is a schedule a decent NU team could go 8-4 in. Oh well.

First, it’s common that defenses dominate in early August practices. Defense can run simple stuff. Read and react. The offense is still figuring out its timing, precision, etc. My gut reaction to hearing Rhule yesterday complain about the offense was “oh shit, here we go.” But it’s probably him working to create a sense of urgency and not get down on themselves after the resignation by ZB and a bad practice. I also think this means we can’t overestimate how the defense is playing and how it translates to week 1.

Second, I do think expectations need to be curbed. I agree with @HerbRedman in his assessment of the talent at a macro level. We’re borderline bowl eligible. We’ve spent a bunch of years in a row not developing players. They came in as good as they were going to be. In some cases they came in the best they were going to be. The maturation of our talent is below Minny, lowa, Wiscy, etc. and that is more important than how many stars they had in HS.

I think what this all means is we’re going to be in close games this year many that will result in losses. Perhaps the difference this year is that our close games are going to be because we’re just not talented enough, yet, rather than we shot ourselves in the foot at the worst time. If we stay strong throughout we will get someone. We will beat either Wiscy or lowa while losing to Purdue or Maryland.

One YUGE difference...Rhule knows what he's doing and how to explain what he's talking about irt Offense and Defense, in what he's seeing on the practice field. Frost could never do that in layman's terms. "Explain this to me like I'm 10". Rhule has a game plan, can explain the plan (when needed). He also knows how to speak to the media, the public, and the administration clearly and articulately enough to squash any naysayer or ne'er-do-well's attempt at downing his team. Rhule continually runs circles around our media, I actually think he dumbs down his pressers so that the Dean's and Simple's of the world can understand what he's saying.

There is no video that’s shows enough to be meaningful, Rhule isn’t baring his soul he is saying things that fit whatever purpose he has that day, we need more info from observers with expertise but are unlikely to get it. Even if we had that input it is limited by virtue of the fact that we are playing ourselves. We need to see the Minny game.

All in all I still feel comfortable saying we will be bowl eligible and likely improve more from beginning to end of the season than most FBS teams. I also would not be surprised if we had 4or 5 younger starters at season end than at the beginning of the year, there will be some new guys who are no longer rookies by season end.

It’s hard to predict more than that based on the little evidence we have.

This isn't true.
2AM had 42 turnovers in his first three years. (18, 12, 12)
Jeff Sims has 31 in his first three years (18, 9, 4)
And if you'll notice, most of Sims' came as a freshman. He has gotten better every year to the point he only had four as a junior, three INTs and one lost fumble. He gets a bad wrap as turnover prone mostly due to his freshman season. If he turns the ball over the same rate he did last year, we'll be fine.

His overall effectiveness has gone down as well.

And Nebraska has lost 10 of their last 12 games vs the Big Ten West.

And how many of those were were one score games? And we had a disorganized mediocre coaching staff that couldn't develop players, our defense didn't know how to tackle, our special teams were terrible...and Big Ten West teams still struggled to beat us. And we beat Cockeye last year and Wisconsin beat us by 1 point. And Wiscy has a new coach this year, Purdue has a new coach, Northwestern has a new coach, Minnesota lost most of their defense and their QB, Cockeye is Cockeye, and who knows what Bert can actually do at Illinois. And people who are doom and gloom about our talent level have obviously never looked at the rosters of our Big Ten West foes.
