Crushed to death when some FFA gal from the panhandle went for too long of a face ride. Our condolences @kenyanfeline

Nebraska football started its first training camp practice Monday with roughly half of its players on the field.
No counting up the 120-man roster on this day. In order to help incoming true freshmen and other young players acclimate to practice, the Huskers were running two workouts. One of the older guys — that’s who began their workout at 8:30 a.m. — and one for some of the younger dudes. Because freshman receivers need quarterbacks, too, it appeared Chubba Purdy would get the duty Monday of throwing to them while Jeff Sims and Heinrich Haarberg worked with the older group.
Don’t take too much from that. Haarberg and Sims each worked off a little rust on day one as rain sprinkled the new grass field. Velocity is never an issue with either passer.

Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert didn’t seem to have any rust. If one player reshaped his body over the summer, it was the former five-star recruit who is now on his fourth school and awaiting an NCAA waiver to play this fall. Gilbert has noticeably added muscle and lost extra weight headed into camp.

Anthony Grant, Gabe Ervin and Rahmir Johnson looked the part, too. Johnson has bulked up a tad. Ervin may be down a few pounds. Those three worked with Notre Dame transfer and Omaha Skutt graduate Barret Liebentritt, who could be a factor at fullback.

More camp chatter from Monday:
SEEN: Receiver Marcus Washington in a green jersey with a cast on his right hand. Nebraska’s top returning pass catcher still went through drills during the individual period.

SEEN: Specialists getting in work on the north end of the indoor field. Kickers Timmy Bleekrode and Tristan Alvano, long snappers Marco Ortiz and Camden Witucki and holder Brian Buschini — who is also the starting punter — simulated field goals from about 25 yards out.
SEEN: Nebraska’s near-completion of a synthetic turf field outside the new football building and progress on a media workroom just off the Hawks Championship Center. Husker media currently interviews coaches and players on a Memorial Stadium concourse after practice and inside the current weight room after games.

SEEN: Coach Matt Rhule and Athletic Director Turd Alberts having a conversation along a sideline during individual drills.

SEEN AND HEARD: Defensive line coach Terrance Knighton standing behind a tackling sled putting his position group through a sequence in which the Huskers push back a blocker, step forward and simulate “ripping” the arms of another blocker. “Good rip, bro!” teammates told junior Ty Robinson after a vicious rep midway through.
