The
Nebraska football program held its eighth practice of fall camp Tuesday morning.
The first 20-25 minutes of practice at the Hawks Championship Center were open to the media to view. While no big judgements come from these open portions of practice, it does provide an opportunity for observations.
Before head coach
Matt Rhule, offensive coordinator
Donovan Raiola and a few select players show up for post-practice media availability, here are a few notes from Tuesday's practice:
>> Fans who pay attention will already know this, but it needs to be said again:
Donovan Raiola is completely different in press conference settings than he is on the football field. Raiola, the offensive line coach, and his assistant,
Aaron Coeling, both got after their guys
hard on Tuesday and didn't hold back. Raiola's coaching was direct, loud and peppered colorful language.
>> "This is full speed! This is full speed!" and "Get your splits right! Get the splits right!" are just a couple of the quotes heard from Raiola on Tuesday.
>> Utah transfer offensive lineman
Tyler Knaak was seen coaching up true freshman
Brock Knutson, who had just gotten through a loud and direct coaching moment with Raiola. When Knaak was finished, he tapped Knutson on the helmet the the two got back to the blocking drills.
>> A scout from the Houston Texans was in attendance. His eyes were trained on the offensive line for much of the open session.
>> Running backs coach
E.J. Barthel took
Emmett Johnson to the side and was coaching the second-year back on his footwork on a punt return drill.
>> Receivers
Billy Kemp IV and
Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda, Johnson and true freshman corner
Ethan Nation were seen fielding punts.
>> Receiver
Joshua Fleeks, the Baylor transfer who Rhule said he sent home at the start of fall camp due to being significantly overweight, was back at practice. Fleeks was seen in highlights of the team's scrimmage from Saturday, so he's been back for multiple practices.
>> During a kickoff unit dill, special teams coordinator
Ed Foley was heard screaming, "I wanna see the leverage here, let's go!"
>> Sticking on special teams, true freshman
Cam Lenhardt was seen running down on the kickoff unit and looked very good running and hunting the returner.
>> With
Josh Martin being promoted from special teams analyst to tight ends coach following Bob Wager's resignation, it appeared on Tuesday that offensive analyst
Christian Ellsworth, a Grand Island Northwest alum, was acting as Martin's tight end assistant.
>> During a screen drill that involved only the quarterbacks and running backs, offensive coordinator
Marcus Satterfield and Barthel were seen deliberating between each rep. After the talk, Satterfield showed the running backs how long to block for before taking off to the flat, where Barthel was. Once they got to their landmark (which was Barthel), they turned up field. The two coaches were working out the kinks on the timing play.
>> Over at the defensive line,
Kai Wallin, a junior college addition, got a "perfect rep, perfect rep" from coach
Terrance Knighton. After an Elijah Jeudy rep, Knighton was heard yelling "eyes in the B gap, eyes in the B gap — good" to the Texas A&M transfer.
>> After one blocking drill with the offensive line and fullbacks, Ron Brown was loving what he was seeing from both walk-ons
Barret Liebentritt and
Braden Klover. Liebentritt's name has
come up often when coaches and players have talked about the traditional fullback role.
>> There were several players in different colored jerseys on Tuesday.
Nouredin Nouili was in a green jersey and was doing light conditioning, but wasn't practicing with the team groups. That allowed
Henry Lutovsky to play right guard with the first-team offensive line, along with
Turner Corcoran at left tackle,
Ethan Piper at left guard,
Ben Scott at center and
Bryce Benhart at right tackle.
>> There were several players in yellow jerseys who weren't practicing and limited to just conditioning. Those players included receiver
Marcus Washington, offensive lineman
Teddy Prochazka, tight end
Arik Gilbert, safety
Marques Buford Jr., receiver
Jeremiah Charles, running back
Kwinten Ives, linebacker
Michael Booker III and tight end
John Goodwin.
>> True freshman defensive lineman Jason Maciejczak was also in a yellow jersey, but was going through some of his position group's drills.
