Can't say I'm liking this so much
Whats your beef with quarters and cover 3? Blitzing/man/quarters/cover 3/etc are all viable schemes to run if executed properly. What matters is if this guy gets the defense prepared to play and with proper fundamentals. That will primarily determine success, relative to the individual scheme run.

I should have specified. I wish we would ditch the 3-3-5

Folks…the Happy Ending Society is pleased to report: we’re going to be just fine.

Rob Aurich isn’t a consolation prize — he’s a culture hire. This dude took a San Diego State defense that was “meh” and turned it into a Top-5 scoring defense in one year. Not with 5-stars, not with NIL superteams — with fundamentals, physicality, and elite coaching.

His defenses hit, tackle, and stop the run. They don’t beat themselves. They don’t crumble in big moments. They get better as the season goes on. Sound like something Nebraska could use?

Aurich was a Broyles Award nominee, he’s been successful at every stop, and he coaches the exact style Rhule says he wants: disciplined front-seven play, toughness in the trenches, and zero freelancing. This is how you build a Big Ten defense that travels in November.

Fresh energy. Fresh ideas. Proven results.

The Happy Ending Society is officially N on Rob Aurich.

Sometimes the right hire isn’t the splashiest name — it’s the guy who can walk in, get everyone aligned, and make your defense look like it belongs in the Big Ten again.

Couple of things here:

1) why do we insist on getting “not yet but will be…” guys when we are as profitable an athletic department as anyone? Why can’t we just pay out for elite expectations?

2) this guys fucking LOOKS like a great DC. The beard, the layer of insulation. We may have a DUDE on our hands
My gut feels a lot better about this guy now than it did when we promoted Butler.

Copilot can fucking SELL hire better than a Nebraska message board. Love he was hired to focus on Edge players, go get sacks…:

Current Role and Recent Success

• Defensive Coordinator at San Diego State (2025):
Aurich led one of the most impressive defensive turnarounds in college football. Under his leadership:

• San Diego State ranked No. 5 nationally in scoring defense (12.6 points per game) and No. 7 in total defense.
• Improved from 97th in scoring defense in 2024 to 5th in 2025, and from 114th in total defense to 7th.
• The Aztecs allowed the fewest points in the Mountain West and posted three shutouts, tied for the FBS lead.
• Aurich was a Broyles Award nominee for top assistant coach in the nation

Previous Coaching Experience

• San Diego State (2024):
Initially hired as Edge Coach, later promoted to Defensive Coordinator.

• University of Idaho (2022–2023):
Served as Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. Key achievements:

• Guided Idaho to its first FCS quarterfinals appearance since 1993 and first nine-win season since 2016.

• Improved scoring defense from 31.5 points per game to 22.1 over two seasons.

• Ranked 15th nationally in total defense and led the Big Sky in interceptions.

• University of South Dakota (2018–2021):
Worked as Special Teams Coordinator and Inside Linebackers Coach.
• Coached multiple All-MVFC honorees and All-Americans, including Jack Cochrane (NFLPA Collegiate Bowl participant).
• Oversaw standout seasons for players like Darin Greenfield (national defensive player of the year voting).

Playing Career

• Played college football at Minnesota-Duluth

Recognition and Impact
• Known for defensive rebuilds and rapid improvement in team performance.

• Praised for meticulous planning and scheme adjustments, earning trust from head coaches during transitions.

might have to switch my badge after this speech

I don't know why everyone ignored what Rhule said... he said he wanted someone who was a better fit, got the most out of the players instead of saying the players couldn't execute the scheme, etc. He wasn't looking to totally redo the defense, just maximize the pieces we have.

This is a perfect fit - this guy literally did exactly that at SDSU and is a nominee for the best assistant coach in the country, and has experience with a similar scheme to what we already run.

Butler wasn't necessarily bad... we had the #2 pass defense in the country this year. He's a career secondary coach. Needed some fresh blood though and we got someone that checks all the boxes.
