Who’s your coach!?!

It's hard for me to separate how much of this would be due to the "tougher" Big Ten today vs how much we've fallen off.
Under Bo it felt like we were usually a top 25ish team. A top 25 team today in the Big Ten is still winning about 9 games a year. We had top 25 wins. We were competing with (usually not beating) top 10/top 15 teams in Texas and Oklahoma, etc.

So I feel like a big part of the reason we feel the competition is so much tougher today is because we suck a lot more than we used to.

Pelini started the skid of losing to the Northwesterns of the world. Middle class of the B1G caught up during his time here.

Do you think he's 2 of 3 right now on coordinators though? I like his OC and STC. DC I think is still up in the air because they are so undersized up front. Definitely having some doubts though.
If he hires Ek and a real OC from the get go we probably go 7-5 in 2023 and 8-4 last year. Then who knows what things are like

Instead he dicked around and hired buddies and GA’s for his coaches and is just now getting it together

Also lol at Scrote not even being a poll option
Ill Allow It GIF

I voted BC (mostly because I missed Rhule as an option), but now that I think about it, it wasn't just a Cosgrove problem. I can remember when our offense was equally as pathetic. There were points when the crowd would cheer if we just got a first down in the game, it was that bad at one point.

The way Callahan operated would have been perfect for this era.

It's a toss up between him and Rhule.

I think Pelini with kids these days would have really struggled.

I think a lot of people will disagree with me and it's probably fair, but if the AD department didn't try to undermine Mike Riley every step of the way, he won 9 games and then they made him fire his long time DC Mark Banker, they forced him to hire that fucking idiot DC and forced him to hire a terrible GM. I dunno he might have been OK.

I have trouble believing that Riley could’ve been successful here. And apparently no other program thought he was their answer. That being said…

Everything you said is true. Administration wanted the anti-Bo. Someone they could micromanage and control. If we had to hire Mike Riley, we didn’t, then at least let him run his program his way. Pretty shitty to micromanage your head coach and then fire his ass after 3 years of him doing everything you told him to do.

But that’s also one of the reasons I think Riley would’ve ultimately failed under a different administration as well. The fact he could be manipulated is/was a problem. He wasn’t a strong personality. Jobs like Nebraska need a strong personality; someone with a proven plan and clear unwavering conviction. That’s just not Riley. He’s a nice guy who wants to make sure everyone is happy and wants to have everyone like him. IMO, in this business… there is gonna be small minority groups and people that are very loud and misguided. You can’t concern yourself with these people or give them a single inch of latitude. And you can’t care what they think. You have to either ignore or bulldoze these distractions and I’m not sure that’s in Riley’s DNA. Rant over.

WTF are you talking about? Osborne wasn't even AD until halfway through the 2007 season when the wheels were already falling off.

That’s why Osborne was brought back as AD in the 1st place. It’s was clear Pederson fucked up hard and Osborne was brought in to either help Callahan right the ship or to cut his sack if necessary.

Apparently you missed the USFL coming to call after he left!

I think an interesting question is if each of those coaches was allowed to stay on from their tenure through today, would we be in a better or worse situation than currently with Rhule.

Maybe slightly better with Bo (almost certainly would have had better results over the last 10 years), but I think performance would have continued to degrade over time and he wasn’t ever going to adapt to NIL. Overall I think we’re better off going forward with Rhule here.

Callahan might have eventually dropped Cosgrove and we would have continued to recruit at a high level. There is also the risk that he would have just continued to completely alienate the fan base and create irrevocable damage.

Frank, and Fuck you to those who are losers who thought Nebraska could become NFL city like Stevie. We had a formula and brand that worked, and you stay with it. Recruit local boys for the trenches and build them, and save the rest for recruiting skill positions to an actual system. Don't tell me it would have been worse, we have had shit for over 20 years (with small glimpses), no brand, no clue, so like I said Fuck you to those that don't like it, and piss off if you don't think it would again.

I can’t imagine Bo Pelini building a program in the NIL era. He would have an attitude in which he would refuse to pay players significantly and the roster would just be an absolute mess.

Would have to go with Billy C. He would have a top notch recruiting and NIL staff and I think would excel in finding transfer portal guys. He was an underrated offensive coach while he was here as well.

I thought Callahan's offense was overrated while he was here, didn't think much of his offense.

You're going to offend "air raid concepts" guy who learned football via the XBox.

I do miss having an offense where you beat teams down, have continuity and an identity. We don't need to go back to the I Formation/option offense, but have some pride and develop a running game. NU's offense has disgusted me for most of the last 10 years. I never realized how much I'd miss Tim Beck.
