Been to hundreds of shows, probably over 1000, of shows in my day.

I suppose the BEST was Knebworth 1990 Silver Cleft Awards Show

Went to the UK to go to the Silver Cleft Award winners show charity concert for Nordoff Robbins.
About 120.000 people at Knebworth. Left London at 7am to head up there and got back at 6am the next day after waiting for hours in the rain to catch the train back.

I got to go to the original (2004) Crossroads guitar festival at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Absolutely insane day of performers if you're into guitar, including:

I was incredibly PO'd because the concert started earlier than what the ticket said (this was before the days of every detail being available to double check online), and the first performer was Steve Vai, who was one of my favorites, so I missed most of his set.

Day was scorching hot & basically everyone there was sunburned & borderline heat stroked by late afternoon.

This was the first place I realized Mayer was a guitar genius & not just a pop act. Buddy Guy had incredible energy. Ravi Shankar convinced me that the sitar needs to be outlawed in the US & anyone playing it deported. Jimmy Vaughan is not in the same realm as his brother. Joe Walsh had the chillest vibe & had the audience eating out of his hand. Carlos Santana is not an impressive guitar player & I don't understand anyone who thinks he is. Robert Cray Band is super fun. I've never been a huge James Taylor guy, but he is super smooth, & even the rock crowd appreciated it. Vince Gill is so underrated.

Lots of guys came back out to play with other performers & tons of improvisations. Clapton just flawlessly jumped in with multiple guys.

They also had a nationwide competition before the show to find the best unsigned guitar player, and the dude (Michael Kelsey - link of a random video by him) played an unreal acoustic fingerstyle - was doing more impressive stuff on that than most of the players there on electrics.

His dad was a musician that played with lots of greats like Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker & Count Basie. There's a funny story about Buddy playing alongside the Grateful Dead on a tour and shaking hands with Jerry Garcia, while he was eating a rib out of his other hand. Jerry didn't like that. Buddy was a large man, probably weighed 400+ lbs when I was doing shows with him later in his career. Sometimes he had to get around in a wheelchair but always stood on stage. He was mesmerizing to watch during soundchecks. You could see he just had a different understanding and ear for music. He could play any instrument and would regularly correct his band members during soundcheck by showing them on their instrument. He was a perfectionist when it came to the music. Crazy to watch that big bastard put down his guitar kicking the drummer out and then squeeze in behind then drum kit to show him how it should be done. Sometimes he sang while playing the drums, which is rare and not easy to do

Buddy could be a real grump to work with as due to his excessive weight he had serious back and knee pain. Seemed like he was always quite surely. 1 day he was barking at me and I had enough so I snapped back asking is there anything I can do to make you happy? He said it would be great if you had a god dammed TV in this venue so he could watch his fucking Huskers play. You know big guys are always hungry so I asked him what food he was craving to which he responded Chicken Wings. Told him we'd let his band and my sound guys finish setting up the stage plus start sound check so we could go get Chicken Wings and watch the rest of the Husker game. Wheeled him to a restaurant and watched the Husker game, which we won. He ate the fuck out of some food. Buddy was hungry for more than just wings. Seemed like he ordered 1/4 of the menu. Had no idea he was a huge Husker Fan and we got along great after that.

I was connected at one point in the Omaha scene for a time and everybody had a Buddy Miles story especially with blues artists. If I recall correctly, and I might be misremembering, but I think his son would show up from time to time at open mics and jam.

Fun listening to some of the old timers in that space.
 
  • Prince in Vegas was epic. Just insane how good he is.
  • Hard Rock Live in Hyde Park - Was weird because it was during the day and ended by like 6, but the acts were fantastic.
  • HIM - San Diego House of Blues.
  • AC/DC - San Diego Sports Arena. Loudest concert I've been to outside of Ozzy at McNichols in Denver. Literally thought my hearing was toast, but was insanely good.
 
There are two types of people. Those who love creed and limp bizkit (bottom one is Fred Durst) and those that lie and say they don’t love them. I had the pleasure of seeing both when I was 15.

I do really like both of these bands but in all seriousness best concert was probably deftones at Sokol in 99 or 2000. The entire family values shoe was pretty epic though

I'll bet the "no moshing or body surfing" was adhered to by all concertgoers.

1. Nirvana at First Avenue, Minneapolis, 1991 right after Nevermknd came out. Urge Overkill opening. They were already way too big for the venue. Just insanity.

The did an acoustic set at a local record store earlier in the day. Someone tried to give Kurt shit by yelling “Play Negative Creep!” assuming he’d never do it acoustic. He said “Just you wait” and then closed the set with it. Glorious.

2. Beastie Boys, First Avenue, Check Your Head tour. Pretty much played the entire catalog - did a couple of medleys to get everything in.

3. Pixies, First Avenue, Doolittle tour. Also did almost the whole catalog (I believe they skipped Here Comes Your Man because it was popular) in, IIRC, alphabetical order.

4. Paul McCartney, Rose Bowl. Mentioned in another thread - Ringo Starr (and Joe Walsh) joined for encores. The closest I’ll ever get to the Beatles.

5. Pavement, most recent reunion tour, Los Angeles. My favorite band of all time. Finally became a great live band. Briefly chatted with Marc Maron in the crowd.

6. Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service, Hollywood Bowl. 20th anniversary tour for Transatlanticism and Give Up. Indie rock perfection (with Saddle Creek artist Jenny Lewis adding to the majesty).

Agree vigorously on all counts.

The First Ave thing was amazing because it was just a quirk of timing. Was booked before they knew what news going to happen. I was surprised they kept the in-store date - certainly didnt need to drum up an audience at that point.

Got them to sign my Bleach CD. Very prized possession.
