Nebraska tight ends coach Marcus Satterfield

***Satterfield said Haarberg was playing “a totally different game” now as a tight end, but his development remained right on track the way NU had hoped.

He said Haarberg had “two good blocks out there today,” which was probably the most significant adjustment the former QB had to make.

***Satterfield said that last season was an “interesting” ending for him, but he was just happy that Nebraska won a bowl game. He said his adversity was “no different than a player getting benched.”

He wanted to remain a part of the program and be an example for his players to make the most of their situation.

***Satterfield said Nebraska’s new staff was “all on the same page… I love where we are.”

***Satterfield loves coaching tight ends, which he called “the greatest position in football.”

“I’m happier than I’ve ever been in coaching.”

Satterfield on Markway, Lindenmeyer, and Nelson

***Satterfield said he hadn’t seen much from Mac Markway because he remains limited from his injury. Markway is a great student of the game and was starting to “move around a little” in practice.

***Satterfield said Luke Lindenmeyer was emerging as a leader on offense and the entire team. “He does everything the right way. He’s trending in a direction where the world is his oyster.”

***Satterfield said Carter Nelson weighed 238 pounds now and was where he needed to be coming off his surgery. The goal is to make him “the best tight end he can be.”

“He’s only going to get bigger and bigger and bigger,” Satterfield said. Nelson can be a matchup nightmare with his speed and size vs. slower linebackers and smaller DBs.

***Satterfield doesn’t know when exactly Nelson will return to practice.

***Satterfield praised walk-on Cayden Echternach as a player who could find a spot in NU’s tight-end rotation. He said Echternach ran 20 mph and was a much better athlete than some might realize.

Linebackers coach Rob Dvoracek

***Dvoracek said Marques Watson-Trent had been “a huge addition to the rim” who hit the ground running in Nebraska’s defense. He said Watson-Trent had a “high-football character and high football IQ” and was “a tackling machine.”

***Dvoracek said the reshuffled defensive staff was off to a great start this offseason. He said everyone understood the standard and expectations of what Matt Rhule wanted.

***On Vincent Shavers, Dvoracek needed to understand the importance of daily improvement. Shavers had a great start last year but needed to take that next step this season.

***Dvoracek said pass coverage was “still a work in progress” for his linebackers. They’ve made strides, “but we’re still working on it.”

***Dvoracek said he was “really proud” of Javin Wright. He said Wright brought experience and leadership to the room. “I’m looking forward to the future with him” as a 6-5, 230-pounder who could run and brought a strong voice to the defense.

***Dvoracek said Rahmir Stewart is now working with the linebackers. “It’s been great.” The staff made the move because they saw his high potential in that role.

***Dvoracek said Dasan McCullough was locking in on his “craft” as a full-time Jack linebacker. McCullough can do many things, but mastering one role has benefitted him.

***Connor Schutt is now working as an edge/Jack this spring.

Tight end Heinrich Haarberg

***Haarberg said the move to tight end had been “fun” for him. “It’s almost like being a freshman all over again except that I have some shortcuts” in learning the offense.

***Haarberg has enjoyed putting on more weight and “push the limits of what my body can and can’t do” in the weight room. He’d never really run a route before, and learning the position has given him a new viewpoint of the game.

***When it comes to blocking and playing on the line, Haarberg said he’d learned that “when you deliver the blow, it’s not going to hurt.” Developing an attacking mindset had been a primary focus for him this offseason.

***Haarberg said he started considering a position change midway through last season. He said he viewed it as “a new challenge” and an opportunity for his career.

***Haarberg said playing in the bowl game was “cool,” but the bowl practices leading up to it were by far more valuable. That was the first time he’d really locked into playing tight end.

***Haarberg said he and Satterfield could “relate to each other” in how last year “didn’t go the way that we wanted to for both us.” However, they both had people here “who love us,” which helped them adapt and continue to move forward at Nebraska.

***Haarberg said the last time he threw a football in practice was Cockeye week of last season. He said he still catches himself doing QB movements like a three-step drop, just out of habit. He misses playing QB but is more excited about his new opportunity at TE.

***Haarberg said he loved Lindenmeyer. They’ve bonded since Haarberg moved to TE, and he always picks Lindenmeyer’s brain in practice and meetings.

Interesting. I was slotting Stewart as a depth piece seeing legit snaps this year at safety. I wonder if this is a move to let him see the field more this year given Safety is crowded with a bunch of seniors, AND good young depth, while ILB is limited with Christian Jone, Dylan Rogers, and Roger Gradney as the youth fighting for snaps. Could be how we red shirt Jones and give Stewart the 50-100 snaps this year he was likely to get.
