I’ve always felt the anticipation with Valentines Day nearly always exceeds the reality.
There’s always that hope that you’ll get that extra effort sex you got that first Valentine’s, and you convince yourself it’s gonna happen again. Then you slide that dress off and see that instead of the thong, garters, and see-through bra, there are Spanx and a bra that resembles something you used to see hanging from grandma’s shower curtain rod..

Do you spend lots of money on it? I told my wife when we started dating that I'll be romantic 364 days a year, but I'm not fucking buying you $80 flowers on Valentine's Day. Don't get me started on the shitty chocolate.

She's honestly totally fine with it. In fact our teenage daughter was giving me shit for it and my wife said, "Buy me coffee in the morning and I'm very happy. I don't want anything else, I'd rather save the money".

it's the stupidest holiday ever conceived.

To be clear on Christmas/birthday/anniversary/etc I usually way overspend on her because I freaking love spoiling her and making her feel appreciated, often double the budget. I promise she feels loved and cherished 52 weeks out of the year.

Basically just an excuse for us to go get a nice steak or for me to cook one… but we rarely go out on the day

What a bunch of bah humbug grumpy cheapskates ITT.

While we don’t go all out, how hard is it to show your gal you love her once a year.

And to the OP, I spent $80 and change today and the Mrs was thrilled that I cared and showed her appreciation. By the way, it was our 44th v-day together.

$80 vs. 1/2 of everything you own. Some of these clowns just don't get it.

Also ... DING!

What you guys don't get is the 364 days.

I promise my wife feels incredibly loved and cherished and I don't need a holiday.

She would be mad at me if I spent the $80

I did take some time out of my morning and we went for coffee

You're right about the other 364 days - they absolutely matter. BUT ... thanks to Hallmark there's now a societal expectation about a "special day" for romance in the minds of the American female, and failing to acknowledge it in any way, shape, or form should be done at your own risk. Or after a very tacit agreement that "this is not what WE do".

I'm blessed to have a Mrs. that sees it the same way I do (very similar to your situation), but I made sure there was a great card waiting for her when she came upstairs yesterday, took her out for appetizers at the "Stoking Goat" (her call), followed by a shopping trip to Mulhalls and Costco (again, things SHE wanted to do with her Valentine's Day). We didn't go overboard, and this morning over breakfast she thanked me for a very nice day yesterday ... which may have been influenced by the masterful administration of a good weinering last night!

Update: I thought all day long about what my wife would be wearing under her dress, and that she’d be anxious for some anal.
Turns out that I woke her up in the middle of the night on the 13th, so she didn’t sleep much. She was in bed before 9, didn’t wear a dress, and halfway through dinner I told her “You won’t have to do anything but lay there. If I need you to move, I’ll take care of it.”
THE FIRE STILL BURNS HOT, FELLAS!
