Basketball Gavin Griffiths Is N

If they have 3 spots (pre transfers out/NBA draft), I'd think they'll target someone who can handle the ball, someone who is a very good point of attack defender (ideally the ball handler is too), and a big who can shoot and distribute.

Berke has shown a bit more in distribution this season, but he might want to go pro in Europe. I wouldn't bet on Oogie's back though he fits the description.

But the point of attack defense from Hoiberg and Lawrence is probably the biggest thing they need to replace. They do a lot of good defensive work with the system moreso than any individual defender but a lot of that works because of the point of attack defense

Agree. Be nice to get in on an elite pg. Maybe another big. Just have to also make sure they fit the culture/system.

Probably going to need 2 guards and a veteran big. Probably quality wing to complement Frager too. If you’re talented and coachable you can score a A LOT of points in Fred’s offense. Can’t wait to see who we get…

Why do you have a ? next to Berke? Do you think he may not be back?

I think there's a strong chance he goes to play overseas. And if he does, we're losing all 4 guys that handle the rock. Not ideal but thankfully there's the portal.

Nebraska's fishing lure in the transfer portal is a much more attractive lure than we have ever possessed. W are going to be mentioned with some big name players in the portal this year.

I'll be surprised if this happens, strictly from a resources standpoint. Big names in the portal demand a shit ton of money.

I'm hopeful Fred continues to fill from the portal from a fit standpoint. Our successful portal guys have been fit types; Williams, Gary, Mast, Sandfort, Lawrence (I know, but still), Allick, Griesel, Walker, Essegian, Berke, Bandoumel, and even Morgan to an extent. Our unsuccessful portal guys; they weren't fits & their style of play resulted in poor results.

Outside of BMac, the fan favorites fall under the fit category.

Padyn Borders has done an incredible job identifying guys that fit. He doesn't get enough credit, and it seems like Fred trusts him a ton with his eye for players.

But I have no idea if the landscape of NIL is for basketball players from national shops. Like if Dawson Battle would come to Nebraska, he probably won't make much but do likely NBA dudes get deals for being likely NBA dudes independent of what the schools can set up? It's an outlier but Zion signed his Nike shoe deal that's about to expire at Duke (maybe even pre Duke)

Rare but those are the ones you want. Hoiberg will now have his pick of those handful of guys.
Oh absolutely. Outside of a few guys (that 5 from Charlotte) who went to Tennessee I haven't really gotten the vibe that Fred has been out bid in the portal. They just go target who they want and land them with the money they have.

But the general sales pitch now is probably "we play really fun basketball, You will win a lot, and I was an NBA front office guy who coached in the league so I know how to get you there"

We will win multiple nattys in basketball over the next decade. Probably at least 8 iwbh.

Has there been any talk of increasing our NIL funding for the basketball program after this big season? It would seem with the fan excitement and the hype around this team and Fred that he would be getting more resources?

We have a ton of momentum now with this program and it would be a shame if we didn’t capitalize that and back Fred up big time in the portal.

You notice that I said mentioned, I didn't say that Nebraska would necessarily think they were right, or place the money on the line. What Nebraska can offer now that they didn't have before is a lot of attention that didn't exist with the program previously, and the potential for more exposure for players who maybe need that to be able to get those higher value NIL offers.
I would also suspect Fred will have more money for NIL going forward.
