He wasn't a bad guy, but he was basically a homeless vagabond and acted like one. Dunk understanding that and wanting to do something better is the point.

Would have loved to see a Game of Thrones with Richard Harris, Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Oliver Reed and the like. They would have been drunk the whole time but still better than most you see today.

In the directors/writer recap after the episode, they said they portray him as a fool and the make fun of him the entire show so they needed a reason for him to be so self confident and cocky. Thus the giant dong. Makes sense.
