Minchey to Flip

Trust me I love piling on with the mob just like everyone else; but why are we so certain that when the visit didn’t got pushed back and the contract didn’t get signed that rhule and company were just sitting there with their feet up. They can read the room and tea leaves just like us.

Obviously this is not the outcome they were hoping for; but to say they didn’t have some level of apprehension here I’m guessing is completely untrue. I’m sure they were in communication with other portal QBs with something like “hey we have an offer out but if it is not signed by X date would you be interested in coming for a visit”.

Sir I am reading multiple paragraph long posts about people giving up on football because some kid (who got beat out by a freshman) they never heard of 10 days ago decided he'd rather take double the money to play closer to home.

he isn't THAT much better of a prospect than TJ Lateef.

edit: Rhule/Big Red do look like dumb dicks who got strung along. When a kid goes on ESPN and says he is coming and his agent has the papers and says he is going to sign what else can you do? Maybe Dana should have flown to Kentucky and held him at gunpoint
This.scenario.happens.every.year.to.programs.in.every.conference. It's been happening for years, long before NIL (signing day flips). It doesn't make Nebraska look any more dumb than any other program who loses a recruit. IT HAPPENS.

This will pass by in a few weeks and we won't be talking about it anymore, just like every other fan base of a program that gets pissed they miss a recruit.

the FOMO is taking over here guys. Minchey was good. THere are other guys out there that are as promising as Minchey was. Let's see how this plays out before we lose our shit.

Its really supply and demand whoever has boosters with the deepest pockets

We were in contact and thought we had an agreement, should've had a signed contract 10 mins after portal opened rather than let him keep stringing us along.

I mean we probably did have the papers sent over 10 minutes after his name was in the portal, but we can't exactly force a guy to sign the papers.

You can’t.
But if you can’t get the guy you’ve been tampering with for weeks to sign that’s on you.

Nebraska and Rhule failed to sell any value to Minchey.
You only have that many conversations only to get strung along if your pitch or trash.
Minchey has likely known for 2-3 weeks what Nebraska offer was. It wasn’t a surprise low ball offer.

Then move on immediately. Don't give the ok to set up a visit on the 7th, just go after someone else.
That’s what you do when you are desperate with no vision.
You latch on to the first warm body you hope to make a sale on.

They likely had no sales plan and pitched zero real value to Minchey.

Sometimes you just have to stand back and admire The Curse

that's fair. Still not sure what the coaches could have done. It sounds like they were under the impression he was N too until his agent called and said "whoops Kenny accidently signed the papers for Kentucky...welp see ya later". They very well may have matched/countered his offer but were not giving a chance.

One thing I am curious on is what he was promised here vs Kentucky? Did Kentucky guarantee him a starting job vs Nebraska saying he would have to beat out Lateef?
IDK what went on behind the scenes.

I just come back to looking at this objectively: if you're Minchey, do you take more money + playing for Will Stein or do you go to Nebraska? I hate to say it but the kid made the right choice, no matter how flakey he was in doing so.

Because we are also now desperate.

It’s absolutely laughable that if Minchey was the guy we wanted we didn’t give him an offer good enough to prevent him from even having this opportunity to begin with.
yeah, that was my point

how would you ever have anticipated someone might offer $3M to Minchey? No one would have expected that.

I kinda disagree here. With the way the market is and the way QBs are getting paid, who are arguably the equivalent or worse, or at least perceived that way which is all that matters in the portal, I think you kinda could expect that.

Upper echelon is $5M with Sorsby. You're a "top 10" portal qb, $3M kinda seems like the average going rate.

Matt Rhule killed the Matt Rhule era. Crazy, one good season at Baylor (didn’t beat any ranked teams) made him millions & millions $$
To be fair, they beat Texas that year who finished the year 25th. Not that that little tidbit will change your opinion on Rhule.

I just really dislike the notion of "beating a ranked team" is based on when they play each other, not where they finish the year. See all the SEC schools this year claiming they beat ranked teams in LSU, Mizzou and Tennessee, none of whom will probably finish the season ranked.

I've said this before and it gets ignored. The way they view beating ranked teams puts more emphasis on beating 4-8 Oregon in 2016 (who was ranked at the time we played them) than 9-4 Colorado in 2024 (who finished the year ranked).

a lot of people here big mad about losing a career backup QB
This isn't what people are upset about, it's just the manifestation. Folks are upset that NU doesn't know how or cannot play the portal game. Minchey is a symptom of a more disheartening, underlying problem. The program doesn't appear to be a serious player.

Is that actually the case with Minchey? I don't think so. I think NU got played; and as many others on the board are saying, would it make sense at NU to pay a backup $2 or $3 million to come in and "compete" for the starting job? If it would truly be a competition, then you would have to up LaQueef's money to be equal to the guy you're bringing in for competition.

Now NU is in the position where they have to bring in a guy as the starter and pay him starter money. Additionally, you have to have a real conversation with LaQueef about his current ability to play an entire season of B1G football, which he'll never make it through based on physical structure.

The Minchey plan was a less expensive gamble than the new plan that they are forced into. A lot of fans will lose their minds when NU pays $3M for Chiles or Lagway, but that's what will happen.

I was a recruiting nut back then during the Callahan and Pelini years. I spent hundreds of hours studying recruiting classes believing that if we could just get over the hump, we’d be back to our glory years.

Once we went through four coaches and 15 years of mediocrity, it just finally came to me one day. Seeing how football had changed and how much time had gone by since we were relevant, I stopped looking at college football through only the Husker fan lens.
You get a better perspective of things and how difficult it is to be elite in college football these days. We’re a state of 1.7 million people. We have the greatest fans in America, but we don’t realize how we’re seen outside of this state. We’re just not as cool as we think we are.
When somebody told me these kids playing football these days weren’t even alive when we were dominant, It was an eye-opener for me. I knew there was no getting that back unless we got lucky.

I stopped believing we were entitled to it too. That was a big part of it. Took a lot of shit about “lowering my expectations” but for me, it was just being realistic; something so many Husker fans can’t accept. When I accepted the fact we are no different than any other average program out there, it made it easier because I felt we weren’t under achieving.
I also took a hiatus from messaging boards for several years. That helped a lot. I only returned to this board last year when we started showing signs of being a competent football team again. But I’ve still always held the “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Did that through the frost years, which helped too.

I turned off a lot of football games when we were getting blown out. I know blasphemy. But when you get to the point where you can do that and not let consume you, you know your past the obsession part.

I was a 50+ year-old man letting 18 to 22-year-olds ruin my life. I stopped and thought about that for a while. And I felt really stupid about it.

I still go to games. I still get frustrated when we lose. And I’m bummed for a little while after games, especially last year. But I don’t get angry about it anymore. When you can do that, you know you’ve finally won over the addiction.
100% the way I feel..........until I start watching a game and I get the slightest bit of hope LOL.
