That was my takeaway too. Join a conference and this wouldn’t have happened. I really thought the CFP committee would do the opposite and almost always let them in. Glad to see that’s not the case.

They have a new rule going into place next year if they are in the top 12 they get an autobid like a conference champ. If it was in place this year they would have jumped Miami for the spot.

The playoff selection process is not an exact science and flawed but if you are going to screw a team, let it be Notre Dame.
They get to maintain their independent status while getting many of the benefits of a conference team. Schools like PSU, Miami, Florida State, South Carolina, VT, and Pitt were all former independents that joined the rest of us in conferences. Think if those schools maintained their independence all these years, it would be a mess.
ND thinks they're special and are garnering zero sympathy from the rest of CFB.

I'm fine with them maintaining their independence, but it is also fun to see them get boned for it. Did you see their schedule next year? Going to need to probably be 11-1 to get in.
