Breaking JoBu Out

hire a DC who can bring some front 7 with him please
You’d think this would be common knowledge, but Rhule has made about 12 hires now of guys who’s feet arent even in college football… let alone have any relationships built up with recruits.

But hey, he’s an east coast new yorker- smarter than us

See, that's what I think Rhule's thoughts were. White was already interviewing for HC jobs, so I think he was like "Tony is going to get one next year so Butler can step right up."

White ended up having just as good of a defense in 2024, didn't get his HC job, so made a lateral move. We elevated Butler, our defense took a major step back. Rhule lost. White lost. Butler lost.
I don't think it took a "major" step back. Afterall, this year we were able to get off the field on 3rd more often than previous years. I think DL coaching made the defense look worse than it should have been.

Other than a handful of plays against Michigan, the D did OK.

The biggest turd was Penn State followed by Cockeye, and most of the rest of the games had stretches where you could see we had some things working, minus the front.

I’ll be real interested to see what we do here. Assuming Snow coaches the bowl and Rhule chases someone legit outside the current staff.
The problem is when those handful of plays go for house calls or 30+.

The team missed basic assignments all year and it ended up making our elite secondary look shitty by the end because they had to pick up the holes of the other 2 levels.

I’m not necessarily sure one year was enough for Butler, but his defense was routinely in the wrong position and it got gashed the more he put on film.

Danny Odem still gonna sign with Nebraska? 1 of 2 blue chip prospects for Nebraska. Then if they fire Donny...is the other blue chip recruit going to hang around?

I'm not suggesting that you keep a coach just to keep a recruit...but Nebraska isn't exactly burning it down on the recruiting trail as it is.

I've always been a 4-3 guy but honestly it's Jimmie's and Joe's.

If you're an experienced Husker message board person everybody remembers when Nebraska was a 4-3 team and every message boarder out there was clamoring for a 3-4 to recruit "athletes" for the OLB positions to rush the passer because it was impossible to recruit pass rushing DEs. Now the claim is it's impossible to recruit 2 gap nose guards.

I've always used Cockeye and Wisconsin from a few years ago as these examples. Cockeye is a great 4-3 defense. Wisconsin was a great 3-4 defense. Both worked in the Big 10 because they recruited, developed and coached up to that defense.
I remember the D-end complaints - I think those were occurring when we were putting Cam Meredith out there to rush the passer.

Has he paid up yet tho?
Jack Nicholson Yes GIF

I’d take a guess Odem has more of a relationship with Addison Williams than John Butler. I’m not even sure Butler recruited

Hopefully this is just added motivation to make undeniably great hires.

Guessing Addison is his guy
