I got into a pissing match on twitter and I’m worried I was wrong. On the TV Broadcast they said if it was targeting it would negate the result of the turnover and safety.. But is that actually true? Or would it just tack 15 on the end of the play?

For enforcement you would use the "basic spot" which is spot of the fumble.

A team cannot score if they commit a penalty.
Spot of the fumble, Cockeye ball? If a flag is thrown this is all easier but without a flag what can they over turn?

Striking head or shoulders of opponent with the crown of the helmet is targeting. It was definitely targeting. That was terrible officiating not to acknowledge the penalty. 9 point swing as a result. Does this mean we win the game? No. I hate bad officiating.
It was a momentum swing for sure.

Doubtful we were going to win, but you never know.

But watching that and then the refs not doing anything about it has to kill morale.

Did they actually even officially review it? It doesn’t seem like it as no announcement was made

1. If targeting is not called on the field, the Big Ten replay team in New York is then responsible for buzzing the head official and stopping the game to review for possible targeting. It's not subject to a review request from a coach.

2. The way the CBS crew reacted, I think they were shocked it wasn't reviewed. So to answer your question, I don’t believe it even went to review.

To answer @Herbie's question, the safety would have been nullified. Nebraska would've had 1st and 10 at the 37 after the penalty. Sharar, their top linebacker, would've been kicked out of the game and forced to miss the 1st half of their bowl game.

As for the absence of the review, I've watched enough Big Ten games the last two seasons that I'm convinced there are moments when the Big Yen replay crew seriously aren't paying attention to tier 2 or tier 3 games. Yes, I'm sadistic for watching Michigan State vs Youngstown State at 11 am, but I've watched it enough to realize there are things not reviewed in that game that halt a game for 7 minutes during tier 1 Big Ten games.

And Nebraska vs Cockeye was not tier one.

I did when I saw it live. Forceable contact with crown of helmet.

However, you don't see a lot of those called.

I can see how an official could miss that call in the moment. It's bang bang and you're immediately following the fumble into the end zone.

However, I don't know how the replay crew in New York could possibly see that hit and not seek more time to review.

I seriously can’t get over how terrible this no call was.

Before anyone says it, yes I know that it didn’t lose us a game.

But this no call changed the game entirely. You go from down 8 with the ball at the 30(?) to having to get another defensive stop.

Nebraska at that point needed a quick stop on their first possession of the half and something positive to happen on the ensuing possession. They got the stop. Call the penalty and Nebraska has very attractive field position for its first drive.

Absolutely atrocious officiating that’s simply too common in this conference.

Someone needs to be held to account. I’m sure we’ll get an “I’m sorry” from the big ten office when we send this clip in. Same with the two DPIs in the end zone in the first half.

Terrible officiating crew that should be fired into the sun.

it was on national TV and one of only 2 Big 10 games that day, as well as the only Big 10 game on at that time. I wouldn't be shocked if they took the entire day off, but there's no way this call went under the radar because they had better things to do
