So… Where do we go from here?

I think keeping Raiola is the ideal path, but if he and his camp are demanding too much you gotta let him walk.
If Raiola tries to hold you hostage like he allegedly did last year, you absolutely have to let him walk.

If you doubt this, just think back to the candy ass run stopping we were doing in GAME ONE of the year and how it basically continued on all season. We knew this season was fucked during that Cincinnati game. Deep down we knew it. If the team finishes 8-4 it's going to be a mirage bc we only go there due to this schedule.

Look at the MSU-MD-NW games.....we could have easily lost 2 of those games. We honestly could have lost the MSU game too if you remember how that game was going sideways.

My point is, the team has WAY too much $$ locked up in our QB-WR-DBs. As many have mentioned, that's not where you want to be elite in today's B1G. If rather be elite at DL-OL-LB-RB.

This is the first back-to-back set of bowl eligible seasons in over a decade (will not count 2015 technicality). Note for the persistent sandy vaginas of this board.
The glass half full look on this season is that Rhule JUST ABOUT had us to 10-2 level (vs this schedule) but we failed in 4 roster mgmt areas:
  • OT
  • DLx2-3 players (George was a miss)
  • LB (MWT was a miss)
  • RB

So this offseason comes down to two jey things:
  1. Our GM making the right calls. We pay him $800k/yr IIRC so he better
  2. The expanded NIL $$ pool that Rhule says we have. Have to make the right calls

This was the glass half full perspective, brought to you by Smirnoff Ice

Where do we go?

The recruiting trail.

Michigan, Minnesota, and USC were definitely not talent issues.

Last night was.

That’s a team with top 5-10 talent on it. The top 8 football players on the field last night probably all played for PSU. I don’t know that you can say that about any other game we’ve played this year.

I truly believe that if we just had Ty and Nash for one more year we win every game except last night.

That's how important that run stopping d-lineman is in our version of the 3-4...and how big of a failure it is not to really replace them

Yup, almost everyone could see, before the season even started, that we were small and inexperienced on the D-line. We (myself anyway) just hoped we were wrong. We weren’t 😒

No doubt

I also think we need to let Holgorsen have full rein over his offense. This shit looks way way way too similar to Satterfense for me to think he’s actually being allowed to design/call the offense he was an expert at for all those years

We put up 6 points against Minnesota, not sure how Ty and Nash help with that

GbrAccept the fact that we’re basically the New York Mets of CFB— huge history, huge budget, huge fanbase, but years of “we should be better than this” energy.
Starting to feel like we just have to accept that what we’ve seen the last ten years is reality.

There’s a reason that we are constantly battling with Minnesota and Northwestern and not remotely a threat to a better team. Maybe this is just what this program is now. Maybe, unfortunately, those are now our peer programs.

A few years ago we were looking longingly at Wisconsin when they were always in the national conversation and a threat to win the conference or at least make the title game. Now we look up at Cockeye and imagine if we could be where they are, in the tier just outside of relevance, that would be an improvement.

We’ve tried all kinds of different coaches and ADs. We’ve thrown money at assistants. We got a 5 star qb. But the program stubbornly remains in the big ten’s lower middle class.

The consistency of the mediocrity across regimes is probably trying to tell us something at some point.

If you are elite at DL and OL, then your LBs and RBs will be productive. Own the LOS and everything else falls into place, much easier.

Probably would’ve/could’ve helped us stop Minnesota from breaking off some of those huge runs and kept us in the game.
