Someone please tell me why I should believe that Butler will be a good DC

Are truly that unhappy with the performance of the defense so far this year?

I think next year we need to deal him a full hand - get some starting DL help from the portal, probably a LB or two as well. Let’s see how well he can do without the glaring roster deficiencies and then we can pass judgment.

It’s hard to do everything against a WB like Nico. You can clog up the middle and play blanket coverage and then he beats you with his legs. You can dedicate a spy and sit in zone and then he can throw the ball. Or you can play contain and then you’re vulnerable to the RB.

We didn’t play very well on defense tonight but we’re walking out with a win and having given up 21 points. How’d we do against UCLA last year?

They’re frustrating as hell to watch. Especially against Nico where he just kept bleeding them. That being said, I’d like to see our good young players get a little older and see us spend a bit more NIL on defense in general.

We've been elite in our pass defense, and finally decent on third down defense most games.

Defensive front has been an issue, but we also lost our two dogs up there & brought in a new position coach, so I'm willing to give him a year there before judging how much is coaching & how much is personnel.

I was packing up a tailgate 25 mins after the Northwestern game about 15 mins from the stadium - Butler walked by us with a beer in a Dixie cup appearing to have walked from the stadium, came up to us and shook all our hands and apologized for the game being tight. Seems like a good dude so I'm fine with another year after another offseason but I think everyone agrees that his leash is short

Weakness upfront was quite evident against Cincinnati, but we lost a ton up front and our front four has gotten somewhat better as the year progressed. We're nowhere near dominant, but we've played good enough defensively to be 9-1. Our offensive game plans have been far more disappointing.

This is the one thing I keep telling myself is our best defenders on the front seven are mostly young pups.

This plus a bazillion.

We have a 9-1 defense and yall want to bitch.

I just can’t with the taters anymore.

??? This offense this year has been far more creative at creating explosive plays than anything we have put on the field since T-Magic and that’s a LONG time.

And Holgs is finally accepting the fact you win on the ground in this league. Another thing we haven’t had in 10+ years; an OC that knows how to adjust his philosophy mid season.

Don’t agree with that take at all. No he’s not perfect in play calling, but name me an OC who makes every call perfect? They don’t exist.

Tom Osborne never had a bad call in the entire history of his time as our OC. Shame on you for not knowing this.

I kind of hate him during the games but he’s actually hard not to like.

Our offense, outside of Emmett, has absolutely underperformed this year. There is significantly more talent and experience on that side of the ball than there is on defense.

We're...
27th in scoring defense
26th first down's allowed
24th in 3rd down defense
98th in sacks
2nd in passing defense
93rd in rushing defense
13th in total defense

39th in scoring offense
26th in first downs gained
123rd in sacks allowed
41st in passing offense
94th in rushing offense
66th in total offense

So considering our personnel and experience levels entering the year, which side of the ball has performed above expectations?
