Quick turnarounds aren’t unprecedented. But jumping from James Madison to a perennial bottom-dweller like Indiana and making them borderline elite in his first year, and sustaining it into year two, is unprecedented.

The portal and NIL may have changed the game, but what Cignetti’s doing still isn’t something we’ve really seen before at that scale and not something I think we'll see going forward.

Sure, Kiffin could go to Florida, bring a bunch of Ole Miss guys with him and do a quick turnaround. But that's not the same.

It’s unprecedented because the rules over the last 130 years wouldn’t allow it. It’s only been “legal” to take 10 players (or however many) from your former school and then buy additional talent with booster money for about 3 years. My point is it may not be that unprecedented after 10 years of NIL and the transfer portal.

Norvell got his ass beaten, but everyone made excuses and ignored the program culture red flags. Undefeated season and then bowl game where players sat out to go to NFL, but so did some players that weren't heading to league. The other team players that went into draft ended up playing. (Dawg) He got an extension and they made 13-0 rings. The next year 2-10 and this year so far 3-4 and rumored that firing is about to happen.
He did get smacked in that bowl game but he also went 13-0. Who knows if the game would’ve been any different with everyone playing. Probably to some extent. Might not not have been a good idea now but at the time you extend a coach that went 13-0, 10/10 times

Is it unprecedented? We’ve only had NIL and the transfer portal for what 3-4 years. What Cignetti is doing wouldn’t even have been possible 10-12 years ago with no transfer portal and NIL.

I’d argue we’ll see more Cignetti type “miraculous resurrections” in the coming years. Not tons, because there’s only room for 10 teams in the top 10. lol But I think the landscape has vastly changed in the last few years and the realities of that will become more and more evident with each passing year. And one thing I think we’ll see is more teams make miracle turnarounds like Indiana. All you have to do is marry a good coach with lots of money and I think that’s a simple enough plan for some schools to crack that code.

Conversely, we may also see teams drop off the map instantly as well. One year a team can be a playoff juggernaut, and the next year someone hires away their coach and he takes 8-10 players with him.
This is a good point. Texas Tech is kind of doing an Indiana with the same coach. They could have easily hired some guy and put together the essentially the same roster.

It wasn't possible without Covid

I wouldn't have because he didn't have a culture that wanted to compete despite what happened. Turns out I would've been right. His team has now quit on him 3 years in a row.

The gap between the Ole Misses and Floridas of the world (the Indianas and Ohio States) is smaller than it has ever been. Everyone gets TV and media exposure now and access to the playoffs; everyone has good facilities and nice stadiums. What matters now is having a shitload of NIL money and a good HC who knows how to spend it and how to develop that talent.
Gap hasn’t closed

Table stakes have just been raised

Ohio st spent the most last year and won the title. They’re the dodgers, we’re the brewers.

Doesn’t mean we can’t win. Just can’t fool ourselves into believing we can beat them playing the same game.

They also lost 2 regular season games, one being to a 7-5 team. The gap is definitely smaller than it’s ever been.

We can beat them or at least compete at that level. We just need the boosters we have to open up their checkbook. And they aren’t gonna spend that type of money until they see us beat teams that spend less than us. And it’s hard to blame them, when you’re still losing to the Minnesotas and iowas of the world it hard to convince people more money is the answer. Or the only answer.

Yes. There is no way for NU to be first string and second string as talented as OSU with the current levels of recruiting of hs and transfer portal players. It’s beyond obvious you can bring talent without winning or a big brand watching Texas Tech. NU can do $30-$40mm NIL it would take the boosters going all in on winning vs a bunch of stipulations on how a program needs to be run. Very poor ADs and boosters not doing what it takes has been a multi decade old problem for NU. Dannon upon his arrival noted it is very political at NU.

I was trying to follow Ponyboys logic on NIL and something is off somewhere. Rhule asking for top NIL money vs boosters have given him everything just doesn’t add up. It may be a built in excuse for Rhule but I am finding that hard to believe. We’re at a self imposed NIL disadvantage due to our boosters.

So we need to adjust our expectations to 7-8 wins a year from here on out catching a heater once every 5-10 years max.

Building a program is one skill set, maintaining the program after building is another. Some can do both, not all, and the jury is out on Rhule because he hasn’t stayed anywhere long enough for us to know if he can maintain a program. I like him, do get frustrated from time to time, but we can - and have - hired worse.

Please tell me what he’s built at Nebraska. He has the same record in the same amount of time as the interim that got promoted at Northwestern

We are better than we were last year. There has been progress. Building a program is not easy, and in every aspect, NU is a major rebuild. I am assuming we continue to get better, and then the just as important maintaining what you have built comes into play. Some are builders, some can keep a program going once it has already been built, less than more have both skills.

It is a built in excuse

More money is an answer, but far from the only one

Good coaching and unrelenting conviction are priceless

We don’t have those (they’re admittedly extremely rare), so it’s money money money (easy/lazy button)

Very well could be. It’s a very strange situation with Rhule commenting on it. I can see both sides however procuring more talent seems to make the most sense. Otherwise it does hamstring us vs the top programs.

In what ways? We have the same record through this point of both seasons. We look terrible at the LOS of both sides of the ball. Seriously, what is he building? Most of our fans must just get hypnotized by Rhule on the mic cause he talks a good game. Haven’t seen much development in his time here. Year 3 and not a single O lineman or D lineman he has recruited out of high school has developed to the point where they can make a difference. The only aspect I can say we definitely improved from last year is special teams & it might get us an extra win. 7-5 isn’t anything to write home about though.
