I think the point, though, is that this was the defensive game plan (i.e., be aggressive and risk getting gashed by long runs) and if we could have cuts the sacks down and converted a few more 3rd downs, it likely would've worked, even if that sounds strange now. A total of 36 pressures (7 sacks, 4 hits, 25 hurries). If we could have cut that by a third and the defense could have played at the same level and we likely we have won.

Biff's Butthole Surfers has pressured the QB 87 times in 4 games - 36 of those against us. I am no expert, but this suggests they were doing a lot of stuff for the first time this year against us.

I think they identified Prochazka and Gottula as stool pigeons and they knew Moore, Barham, and Benny could dominate.

Yeah, I think after the bye we are likely to see Pritchett starting at OT.

Likely to also see Merritt getting a LOT more snaps as he is the guy at the second level that seems to do best with the run fits.

anyone have any idea what kind of base defense we were running most of the game?

MRI says we started in a 4-3

JoBu coached for the Bills before coming here and they seem to primarily run a 4-2-5, but they switch to a 4-3 against run heavy teams

I wonder if we will end up running a 4-3 base against some of these big ten teams

We better. Can’t be any worse at this
Point.

Buford…another great culture guy and story but a below average safety. Not to harp but how him and Hartsog haven’t been recruited over at this point is very hard to understand. Not a high bar to replace them.
Guthrie played more snaps than he did yesterday. I think they took Buford off the field after that whiff but I could be wrong

nevermind

How many NFL players do we have? Until we have 50% of starters we can't compete. Those mid 90s teams were loaded.

I think we have more than we’ve had in long time. But a few position groups are devoid of any semblance of NFL players. OT, DT and RB come right to mind. Real talent problem at those positions. And OT and DT are not good positions to be weak at in the B1G 😬

I think we actually have a lot of talent across the board and a number guys that will play in the league. But if you’re bad at OT and DT it can really make the whole team look worse than it is. IMO

9 and 3… Just terrible pursuit angles. 9 takes himself into the block instead of attacking straight down. (They gave you a wide open lane right into the backfield 9?) Then 3… oh my lord what was that? Round rooms have better angles.

My concern going into the game was we’d have no ability to regularly contain their run game and they’d march up and down the field on us. I don’t think the defense played that badly honestly. I figured going in that Biff's Butthole Surfers would spring a couple. Some of that is them and some of that is us. Haynes is a great back and they scheme things up. This run against OU looks awfully familiar

Obviously they dialed one up on the q draw. Three of their four third down conversions came on that killer 8 min drive in the 4th (which was their only drive to reach the red zone for the whole game). By and large good D play outside of the major breakdowns. YMMV.

Have a lot more complaints about the OL play.

Having a pass-happy offense puts a ton of stress on a defense.

There’s a reason why Cockeye hasn’t evolved past 1952 on offense yet typically has a stout defense.

Did it feel like a 3pt game to you? Didn't to me. Maybe that’s progress?

We probably should’ve got beat by 10-17. They missed a wide open td early. We got the 1 in a million Hail Mary, we were bailed out with the taunting penalty. Dylan made some unbelievable plays while the pocket was collapsing to even keep us in it.

Another 3 point loss and that’s about what it’s supposed to be, but the way our run d was carved up and the way we protected Dylan was abysmal. And that’s not something you can easily hide in the b10.
And there were three other scenarios that could have/should have gone our way and we win the game. You point? Are we at the pointe now that we get to bitch about how winning and Losing games?

I guarantee you Biff's Butthole Surfers fans are at home bitching about how bad they played to make the game even as close as it was yet they won. But the same argument is made for them as us. It was picked to be a 3-7 point game by just about anyone who has a clue. It doesn’t really matter how it works out that way if that’s what you’re gonna predict the score to be. All kinds of crazy shit happens in college football every weekend for every team. Nothing we did yesterday was more or less special than anyone else who lost a close game.
