Why did we let/push Tony White out?

its not like we don't have talent and athleticism at DL. Nwaneri, Davis, VP, and Pietzrak are all going to be studs. We are just small overall and we don't have a big dawg in the middle to clog things up. Even a 2021 Damien Daniels would help a ton. And it doesn't help that Lendhardt has reached his developmental limit and Jeudy is a transfer portal whiff
We have some talent but it’s young and not deep.

FIFY

Probably the minority here, but I liked our defensive playcalling today. Some missed tackles really hurt us, but we were aggressive on 1st down and it got their offense off the field pretty quick. We got a TO and two 3 and outs and two 4 and outs. That last 16 play 8 plus minute drive sucked, but we didn't give up a lot of them. Defense got off the field pretty quick and won a lot of 3rd downs by keeping them off schedule. I'd rather give up a 3 play scoring drive than a 15 play scoring drive.

Clean up some tackling issues and some run fit issues and it would have gotten us a win. But sometimes that easier said than done, their RBs are studs and their OL isn't to shabby either.

The 3-3-5 needs a run stuffer if not 2. His defenses that were small at Syracuse were mediocre.

Not saying they aren't talented I think those guys are going to be good. I'm saying how much better would they look if they had a big DT or 2 in there to complement their play. Need a big DT to clog up the middle especially for Big 10 play.

I wasn’t disagreeing with you. I was agreeing but I should have typed that out better

How many 1st and 2nd rounders do you think are on the roster? The prior drafts have illustrated why we aren’t that good.

I agree. Remember this was a Phil Snow gameplan as well. And Snow and Butler had 2 weeks to put it together.

I think they knew that we were at a talent disadvantage (our D vs their O) and that was about as good a gameplan as you could ask for when you have worse talent. The gameplan created a ton of play making opportunities 1v1 and our guys flat out couldn't make the play. I don't put that on Snow/Butler.

I think that OL performance was horrendous. The offense HAD to be the leader this year. We were supposed to be able to put up minimum 30 pts per game. But we couldn't do it vs Cincinnati and couldn't do it vs Mich.

Holgorsen HAS to figure out how to air this thing out and get us to 30 pts.

The fact that we are in year 3 and didn’t have competent replacements in place is concerning for me.
We’re fine. You’re overreacting. If we suck against msu and lose then we can revisit this, but more than two standard deviations above mean all thought Mich was gonna be a loss this year.

I’m disappointed we didn’t punch them in the mouth early when we had the chance - but all the team’s goals are alive and well - let’s see how they respond against msu

True we had two possessions where we left pts out there. It’s not all on Holgs.

Just to be clear, I don't think it's on ANY coach! To me this game was 90% about the team with the better players beating the team with the worse players.

Biff's Butthole Surfers recruits at a level we don't and they've been doing it for 11 yrs. VERY VERY VERY hard to jump in and beat them at this point in our rebuild. There's a reason they went to OSU and beat them last yr even admist a not great yr - they have the talent to.

I think our coaching staff is good. The takeaway from this game is 11 yrs of high level recruiting/development beats 2 yrs of it. I don't blame any of our coaches for this loss. I'm a Jimmies and Joe's guy and today was a textbook example of why.

And underwood’s run was a lb in the wrong defensive set (he thought we were in man and the others were in zone so he cleared out)

The other two big runs were calls where we sold the house on the run and bad gap integrity by shavers and cost us big. High risk/high reward calls to sell out on stopping the run. But if you fuck up your Job you’re screwed.

If everyone executes how they are supposed to, those calls work . I wasn’t upset about the defense today. We did as well as we could have expected under the circumstances of our personnel.
