Looks like it would cost more than the trucks worth to put plates on it. I don't know why but I always look at the dates on those too. I've seen some pretty old ones but not that old.
Back when I was a paper carrier, the guy who dropped the bundles off at my house had in transit tags that he'd just update monthly. He only had the job maybe a year or two, so I didn't see how long he scammed for, but I never saw his truck with plates.
This goes back about 8-10 years, but I was driving in Houston and saw a beat to shit old car with a temporary tag on the back that was clearly handwritten in sharpie with the words "In Transmit." My god.
I don't remember it being that much more, but it was still cheaper to register and insure 2 cars in Colorado than 2 cars in Nebraska. I do know it is more just because we live in the mountains compared to other places in Colorado.
There was a lady that worked in sales for my company that hadn't licensed her car for roughly three years.
About 2 years in, she discovered it was driving someone in our compliance department crazy. Therefore she made it a game. When she left the company after 3 years, her car still wasn't licensed. It actually was pretty hilarious that there were about 2 or 3 people triggered over this, so I suggested they should just call the cops...but nobody ever did.
I never understood it, but thought it was funny how absolutely pissed it made a few people.
I remember when we bought my wife's Subaru in early 2021, we had to go back at least one time to get new temp tags because they didn't have any new license plates to give out because of Covid. So there for a while there were a lot of people with expired temp tags running around and the cops couldn't do anything about if they wanted too because there were no new plates.
