Well, you were fucking wrong. I'm on a deep dive of Calvados recently. This kind of thing:

Really loving the stuff, but I have to admit that it puts even a Cognac/Armagnac appreciation to shame in terms of up-your-own-ass snobbery. In fact, it's so much further down the line that it almost feels like a horseshoe where I'm coming back around to folks who just pound Busch Lattes. I'll probably be there in the next year or so. Also, bonus points for anyone who gets this reference:

I always knew there were hidden levels of your doucheness yet to be reached.

Freaks and geeks but I don't get the reference? Are you the geek AND the freak?

It's from Party Down. The old guy is a fantasy writer having his book adapted for a big Hollywood movie. He keeps demanding Calvados. Was literally the first time I'd heard of it back in the day, and even then I thought, "man, that stuff is for dweeb assholes."

Love Calvados. I prefer it to most cognacs. I attended a Calvados tasting in Bayeux a city in Normandy where they make it and I was hooked. Hard to believe it comes from apples.

I also like that there's not a big drop off in quality even in the less expensive bottles I've had. You're right though about the obscure part which makes it a bit more difficult to find.

That sounds like a terrific time. It's definitely on my list for when I visit France. The nice thing about Calvados is the region is closer to Paris and so makes it an easier destination than Cognac and Armagnac, which are down much further south and west--the latter almost being by the Spanish border.
