When Frost was hired...

I've said this before but I actually made a bet we'd be in the playoff in 5 years.

My thought process was we had a good chance at the west year 1. In the B1G championship 3 out of the first 5 and win it once. Figured if we won the B1G that would get us into the playoff.

1 to make a bowl game.
2 to win the west.
4 or 5 to win the big 10. I figured Frost would bring in 8-10 4* recruits per year and by year 4 or 5 of his tenure our roster would be strong enough that we could compete with OSU in the title game.

If not for all of the losing and attrition and the pandemic, our 2020 offense could have looked like this:

QB: Martinez
RB: Washington/Mills
WR: Manning
WR: Robinson
WR: Spielman
TE: Allen
OT: Jaimes
OG: Piper
C: Jurgens
RG: Farniok
RT: Benhart

Martinez could have played like a retard half the time and we still would have scored 30 points a game.

I'm with the Baron, although I probably would have said 4 or 5 for the B1G. I was very, very excited about Frost.

Frost was the hire that needed/had to happen at the time. No excuse to not make a bowl game in year 1 let alone 3 years. I thought winning the west should happen in about year 3 and winning/competing for the B1G in years 5-7. The first 3 years have been about as bad as they can be.

I thought they’d make a bowl game first year. It’s not hard to do there are around 400 bowl games now.
Win the division would take 2-3 I thought.
It is for Frost for some damn reason. It’s year 4 and fans will be giddy with a 6 win bowl appearance. Quality coaching would have got us to a bowl in Frost’s first year.

Those skill players on the field at the same time would have been gross

Year 1 should have been a bowl game. They crapped the bed in numerous games, but had a team capable of a bowl. I expected a bowl in year 1 as well.
I had no other expectations other than improvement beyond that. Year 2 was highly disappointing. Year 3 was as well, but I am not willing to put a ton of weight on that, other than the team looked unprepared when we were led to believe they’d be more prepared than anyone.

if 2020 had been normal and we had that group of skill guys then i think we would have had a pretty good season and Frost would be on track and we might all be singing a different tune

It's kind of amazing you pointed those names out because while Frost has struck out recruiting some undersized skill players, he has really hit on some other skill players that retention has just been an issue. Pair that with a couple close losses and yeah the entire Frost narrative is flipped. However, not sure any of those players listed above that aren't here anymore changes those losses to wins. Adrian is to blame for a lot of the losses in my opinion.

2
3
5

Additional playoff category: 6-7 years. Thought it would take a year or two to get over the INDY hump due to expectations.
