When coaches yell at the referee

Does that accomplish anything

I think it depends. If it's obvious a call was missed, a lot of drama and yelling seems to frequently lead to a make-up call. We're all humans, so getting someone to shut up, and get out of your ear probably has some advantages.

I think a referee that is overly obstinate could create issues overall. I'm talking about the types that have the need to prove a point. I think we may have a few of those in the B1G. Although, I thought N's games were WAY more professionally refereed this season than previous seasons.

No. In my experience, it seems to work against you. A calm, this is what happened from my perception...from my experience has been better received. I used to be a fiery dumbass in my youth.

We had the same crew 2 games in a row one year. The first game, was horrible, missed calls, horeshit holds, missed cheap shots on my kids, I was fucking mad. I had my hudl clips qeued up in a playlist I was so pissed about how the game was called. Spoke to the officials before the game, was some acknowledgement...and went on to a good game that was done very well by them.

Maybe @alt f4 can give you a better perspective.

When I’ve coached high school or lower, I’ve made it a point not to yell at officials. I came to a realization awhile ago that when I use to do it I was essentially giving the kids or myself an excuse. Basically, if you don’t get it done and you or I yell at the ref we are saying it’s not our faults that we didn’t get the job done. It was someone else’s. That mentality is why I get so upset when I see parents at kids’ games yelling at officials.

We have a huge shortage of officials in soccer in this country because parents are complete morons.

Now, college and above is a different animal. When we start talking about peoples’ jobs on the line, I can understand it a bit more. Not saying I agree or disagree; just saying I understand yelling at an official at the level.

From someone (not me) who coaches another sport (internationally), he says it varies significantly based on gender, age, & ethnicity.

For example, Hispanic guys expect some heat. Middle aged white women will take it personally. Black guys view it relationally.

Football refs tend to be from backgrounds where you can pick your spots, you can work a call or two, but if you're set at 11 the whole game, you're going to make them annoyed & tune you out.

Always seemed to work out well for this guy -

This. So much this. I've helped coach JH basketball in the past, and the only time I chew their ass is when they say something about an official. Just play.

I don’t yell at the officials anymore. In my experience guys who do it are insecure with their coaching. So they yell like jackasses to make it seem like they know what they are doing.

Kids also feed off that and start to blame the officials. It creates a victim mentality that if they lose it’s not their fault. Realistically there a thousand things you could have done to make the refs not a factor. I tell my kids things like did the ref block your layup attempts and that’s why you missed 10? Was the ref v boxing you out and that’s why you gave up 15 second chance points, etc.

I should also point out that I coached in a rural community where the refs were the wrestling coach, principal, and usually someone else that worked for the school. Hard to be a jackass when you see them 5 days a week.

Hardly ever does it work. The biggest thing is start a working relationship with the coach before the game starts. To prevent an ass chewing in game all starts at 60 minutes prior to kick.

Some coaches yell to yell and don't have a legitimate reason to do so. Players take on the attitude of the coach. If a coach bitches to just bitch, then assistants, and players do the same. Those teams are not getting the marginal calls or judgement calls at all (see Bo Pelini).

However, it really depends who the coach is and how well he knows the rules and if there is a legitimate reason to be upset. That ass ripping might lead to a marginal or judgment call.

I work with the same coaches year in and year we know what we're getting into. Some multiple times a year in college. I work with the top college and high school crews so the coaches also know what they're getting with us.

Got a technical in basketball that lost the game in final seconds, few years later talked to said ref and told me it was because he hated our coach. I laughed but looking back it made a lot of sense, always hated when he'd have our games.

Just goes to show that referees are human. Personal vendetta.

Our old ST coordinator used to ref a lot of JUCO ball in the Jayhawk conference and KCAC in Kansas. He was usually the umpire and right in the thick of shit. He would laugh and basically told the LBs if they kept him clean, he would likely not call much on them...lol.

Do you ever have any games you see on your schedule and think, oh boy, here we go.
