What's Your "If Only" Husker History Change?

Or Barry Alvarez is hired when Solich is canned.

So many since I started following Husker football in 1981:
  • 1982 Orange Bowl - if Turner Gill is healthy, we win that game. Nebraska would have been in contention to be voted #1 the way that day played out.
  • 1982 PSU - that sucked, terrible calls for both the out of bounds catch and eventual TD
  • 1984 Orange Bowl - catching the 2 pt pass. It was the right call, freak play for the guy to break it up
  • 1984 OU game - they don't get stuffed at the goal line (Boz said he knew the audibles) we win that game and play for the national title
  • 1994 Orange Bowl - so many bad calls, they got hosed
  • 1996 Texas - most the team sick. The GREAT AND NOT OVERRATED Terrell Farley was out. They win that game they probably win the national title.
  • 1999 Texas - they fumbled that thing away
All of the above impacted them from playing for or winning national titles. I focus on those the most.

We hire a competent search firm in 2003 rather than leaving it to Steve Pedersen. Bill Callahan was like the fat girl at last call that NU ended up with after striking out on a bunch of other fat girls.

There was not one name in Pedersen's search that you can point to and say, "I wish we ended up with that guy." He really wanted Houston Nutt, which tells you all you need about SP's strategic foresight.

He had 3.5 years with the AD who hired him and did whatever Callahan wanted. He couldn't coach for dick, and his recruiting started dropping after 2-3 years of mediocrity.
You must not have remembered the 2007 class before everything went to shit, the writing was on the wall Jed be fired, and almost everyone decommited.

He was a WR coach at ND in 1997. No chance he’s getting Nebraska or anything close to a Nebraska then. Pederson wanted him in 2003 when he was at Utah.
Yep. Would have been the ideal time to hire him. Unfortunately, we were an early innovator in firing (don’t think people bat an eye at Solich getting canned in 2025) and he was spooked by the precedent.

Don’t know how much we pushed for him though
