Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule

***Rhule said Janiran Bonner tore his ACL against Cincinnati and would miss the remainder of the season. He called Bonner “a tremendous loss. He’s a great football player” who “can just do it all.”

“I just know how much he means to everybody.”

***Rhule said you’re never going to be happy about giving up over 200 yards rushing, though much of that came off of quarterback scrambles. He said the defensive line didn’t have much experience against dual-threat QBs but still needed to play better. Rhule added that the coaching staff needed to do a better job of preparing the defense.

***Rhule said he wasn’t happy about Emmett Johnson’s workload vs. Cincinnati and wanted to get more running backs involved. He said it was ultimately OC Dana Holgorsen’s call because he wanted to ride the hot hand.

“That’s his call, and I was good with it… But that won’t be the plan going forward. We’ll have to play more guys there.”

Rhule talks line play and special teams

***Rhule said Williams Nwaneri played well and had some good rushes, but he lined up a bit too wide on some snaps. “Happy to see Will fly around like that.”

***Rhule said Nebraska’s three-man left tackle rotation wouldn’t last much longer. He thought Gunnar Gottula, Turner Corcoran, and Elijah Pritchett all had their good and bad, and they wanted to see how each of them responded against a live opponent.

***Nebraska didn’t get back to Lincoln on Friday until 4 a.m. The players who bused to the game didn’t return until 5 a.m. They took some time to recover on Friday instead of lifting at 11 a.m. as planned and then had two good practices on Saturday and Sunday.

***Rhule said the defense “played hard, but we probably have to play faster.” He thought NU covered well, especially the top three cornerbacks. There were some poor angles on the ball early on, and that will be a point of emphasis this week.

***Rhule said he wasn’t “completely happy” with Nebraska’s special teams, and coordinator Mike Ekeler “got after the guys” in practice. “Special teams were good, but they just weren’t at the level – we didn’t make any game-breaking plays… It can be way better.”

***On Saturday’s upcoming home opener, Rhule said: “I don’t think there’s anything better that I’ve been a part of in my life than a night game at Memorial Stadium.” He said Kansas City was “amazing” and he’d “love to go back there and play another game at some point.” That said, there’s nothing like a Nebraska home game, especially the chance to play in front of NU students.

“I can’t wait to be at home.”

On Raiola and creating more explosive plays

***Rhule said Dylan Raiola was “excellent.” He had 42 pass attempts without a turnover and maybe “three plays he’d like back.” Rhule loved Raiola’s aggressiveness, especially being more active as a runner and extending plays with his legs.

***Rhule said Nebraska’s goal was to “get the ball in play” – runs and completions – 55 times. He liked how the offense got plays off, but now the next step was creating more explosive plays.

***On the backup running backs, Rhule said Johnson was “the guy right now,” but the others “earned the right to play more.” He said it was just a matter of how the game played out and Johnson being “in a zone.”

***Rhule said the overall message to his team after the Cincinnati game was achieving their goal of making “one more play.” They did that with Malcolm Hartzog’s interception, but there were others they missed leading up to that.

***With Bonner’s injury, Rhule said it was time for Carter Nelson to step up. “It’s his time.” They brought him back slowly from his hip surgery, but “Carter’s one of the most talented guys in the country.”

***Rhule disagreed with the notion that the Big Ten should eliminate scheduling FCS opponents. He said FCS schools depend on those games to fund their athletic departments. He just wants college football scheduling to be “similar” across all conferences.

***Rhule said Thursday night was the only time he would sprint onto the field before a game. “It was just a fun thing” that was more about showing his commitment to get into better shape with his players this offseason. “It was really a fun moment for him.” That was the first time he remembered running onto the field like that.

***On creating more explosive plays, Rhule said, “That’s not an issue for me.” He said much of that had to do with the way Cincinnati defended, and other opportunities nearly broke for big gains. Rhule is confident that he has plenty of playmakers, and nearly all of them had their moments.

***Rhule said all of his media appearances, revamped social media presence, and his new podcast were about giving Nebraska as much national exposure as possible.

Did we ever see Marshall on punt return? Don’t remember it, which is surprising If Barney was dinged up all game,

Michigan ml
Illinois -2.5
USF +19

Really liked that USF line too

A true freshman QB making his first start under the lights at Oklahoma is not going to leave Norman with a win. And while it would be on brand for Miami to shit the bed after a big emotional win, I think South Florida is just a very average team that beat a Boise State team replacing 17 starters in 105 degree heat.

Also Kansas +6.5 at Mizzou is really speaking to me. Its a rivalry game even though they haven't played in years. I believe KU will be very motivated and it ends up in a 34-31 type game.

I think OU’s oline is dogshit. Michigan front 7 should have their way. I live in Oklahoma, the OU home field advantage is way over blown. The stadium does not get that loud at all. Michigan ML

I bet their oline is better than the New Mexico oline which helped produce 21 first downs vs. Michigan. Also, whether you think that OU crowd is overrated or not, I guarantee its unlike any Environment their QB has faced before.

He's going to throw 3 picks and Michigan is going to lose something like 20-6.

I guess we’ll see

Hopefully, we got a discount or reduced rate since they fvcked us last time. They got out of Lincoln immediately after the game was postponed. I think they could have played it on Sunday
Yeah if I remember right, Moos tried to get them to spend night and play the next day. We ended up still paying them, but I think the amount was reduced.
