Alberts talks Frost, sellout streak, B1G officiating and more

ByMICHAEL BRUNTZ 13 minutes ago

During his monthly radio show, Nebraska athletic director Turd Alberts was asked about Husker head coach Scott Frost’s status for 2022, and Alberts said he is proud of the work Frost and his staff have done this year, but stopped short of making pronouncements about the future.

“Making bold, broad statements in the middle of a football season to me can be very counterproductive…I do think there is a time and space for that, but I can tell you I’ve been extraordinarily proud of Coach Frost and our coaching staff,” Alberts said when asked directly by a caller. “I love working with Scott. We continue working together. I see great things for our football program.”

During his hour-long radio appearance, Alberts hit on a number of topics, both football and not.

Alberts said he makes a point to attend football practice even for short periods a few times per week to get a sense of how things are going. He said he stopped by practice on Tuesday and saw a full-padded practice with the ones on defense going against the ones on offense.

“Just trying to get a sense of how positive our team is and the coaching staff and I tell you the one thing I’m really proud of is how hard these young men are working and staying together. That’s a big part of it,” Alberts said. “It really, really matters to them and that really matters to me in terms of where the culture is in terms or the mental aspect and makeup of our football team and where the leadership is.

“I think they’re fairly unified and working together and that means a lot.”

Coming out of the bye week, Nebraska sits at 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Big Ten play with four games to go over the next five weeks. Alberts said the loss to Minnesota “clips your wings a little bit” after a win over Northwestern and three-point loss to Michigan.

“I’m proud of what Coach Frost and our staff have done,” Alberts said. “We have four games in the next five weeks that are a great opportunity for us and I look forward to us playing against Purdue.”

Notes:

— Alberts said he expects Saturday’s game against Purdue to be a sellout. The Huskers have three home games remaining this season — games against Ohio State and Cockeye are set for November. Alberts said he appreciated fans continued support, and believes the sellout streak is safe through the 2021 season.

“We haven’t always done our part for the last several years,” he said. “There’s certain aspects of the Husker fan experience in particular areas that aren’t up to snuff, either, that we’re working through. (The fan base) is what separates Nebraska athletics from every other athletic department in the country.”

— Alberts said Nebraska’s $155 million practice facility is running on schedule and on budget. The Husker AD said there is still work to do on raising the final $20 million, but that he anticipates Nebraska will hit its fundraising goals by the deadline at the end of the year. He said because of inflation about construction, the University doesn’t want to send the second half of the project back out for bid.

— Alberts was asked about Big Ten officiating, and in his answer, he wondered if the crew who worked the Michigan-Nebraska game, may have been overwhelmed by the emotion and the atmosphere in Memorial Stadium. Alberts noted that there were missed calls both ways in that game, and said those kinds of calls typically even out by the end of the season. Alberts said overall that he believes officiating in the Big Ten is “pretty good” but that more time and energy must be invested into experienced officials.

“I’m not sure if that game was a little big for that crew,” Alberts said. “The amount of noise, the energy, it appeared to me, that perhaps, that environment could have been a little big for that crew.”

— Alberts won’t be at the Purdue game. His son Chase is getting married outside of Omaha on Saturday — a wedding that was scheduled prior to Alberts becoming Nebraska’s AD.

If you re-read it more than once, it's more about what he didn't say IMO. He was also careful with word choice.

Turd is being smart and playing all of his cards here. He seems to have left it more open-ended than what people might realize. I still think we're in good hands with Alberts, Green and Big Balls Carter to make the right decisions.

***ADDITION*** I also find it interesting how he says he loves working with Frost, and how he sees great things for the "program" Other institutions firing coaches. He's trying to make it attractive if/when/probably the plug is pulled. .

I've had no doubt that Turd will avoid stepping on his own dick publicly, especially after he had a front row seat to the Moos experience. I don't think Frost can ever get me back on board, but the conversation is definitely different if he somehow rattles off the next 4 than if he does what he is most likely to do and loses them all.

Hey Turd if our coach's name wasn't Scott Frost how proud of four straight losing seasons would you be? Will be asked of him by no one ever.
He’s not going to throw frost under the bus with 4 games left and then go try and tell a prospective coaching candidate “I’ve got your back and you have my full support”
Turd is being very calculated

Oh, I get that. It was less a slam on Turd than an observation of just how damaging adhering to the "Husker Way" really is. In order to not offend a large number of fans Alberts has to play these kinds of word games. All the dipshits in the fanbase and amongst the boosters who won't/can't tolerate criticism of the Home Town Golden Hero will glom on to how "proud" of Frost Turd is. In all honesty I think that the use of the word "proud" is patronizing. It's like hes talking about a challenged child who managed something difficult for him but normal for the unchallenged.

What if Frost won every game but OSU?

To me it read that Turd and those with money haven’t made a decision. The next four games will write the story. It sounds like Frost is gone if he loses out or maybe even loses 3 of 4. Turd could have just as easily said we are headed in the right direction. There is no doubt Frost will be back next year.

it's not even close... People like Taylor in Nebraska, but Frost is loved, revered, and idolized by people. Taylor would have been out on his ass by now and nobody would have thought twice.
Yep, Taylor also isn’t looked at as a great Husker like Frost and a lot of people still look down on the Callahan years aren’t real big on a lot of those players.

I've thought the "just make a bowl" in the 4th year of the Frost era has been a ridiculously low expectation that only came about because of the abject failure Frost has been as a coach to date.

But, it *seems* like the power brokers at the University disagree with me regarding the expectations, and if Frost wins 3 of the next 4 (basically any combination) and gets to 6-6, he buys himself another year.

Agreed, but I cannot imagine this happening based on our performance to date this year. With that said, I hope we surprise everyone and win those games.

I truly have no idea how this situation is going to turn out, but from what I've seen so far ... in Turd we trust. He's impressed me so far, but as a former ESPN talking head it's logical to assume that his media skills would/should be on point.

I think he could go winless down the stretch and it wouldn't matter. Everything that has been said makes it seem like Frost will be out HC next year no matter what.

I can't see it happening either. The question becomes if it doesn't happen, but they keep playing into that "so close" narrative, what does Turd do? What does he have support to do? And for that I don't know what the answers are

I honestly think Turd believes Frost isn’t the guy, but he won’t cross the major donors if they want to keep him for some reason. Hell he was fine with firing Solich in 2003 because the program took a dip on the field and recruiting wise. The video is there to watch. I can’t believe he thinks Frost is on the right path.

I think you're right.

It would be hard to get rid of him if that happens. 6-6 isn't great but it's marked improvement and with an easier schedule on board for 2022. How could you not wonder what the team would look like with a much easier schedule next year?

Now I think the likelihood that Nebraska beats Purdue, Wisconsin and Cockeye this year are about 1%. And I think anything less than bowl eligibility and a .500 record should get Frost removed as head coach.

It's a slim margin, but it's one this team has set themselves up for and have nobody else to blame but themselves.

Honestly, how much better do you feel about this team if they simply beat Illinois and any of those other 4 teams? All of which they had a shot at winning (least likely being Minnesota for Gods sake). They'd be sitting at 5-3 with the remaining schedule of: Purdue coming off a loss and 2 straight very physical games, Ohio State coming to Lincoln after a big game vs Penn State, a down Wisconsin team and an Cockeye team that can not throw the ball.

What a difference a few special teams mistakes and bad plays by a QB makes. Football is truly a game of inches.
