I had a former colleague that operated in a similar manner during that war (behind enemy lines). He was shot in a kneecap and crawled through the DMZ back to South Vietnam to seek treatment for his wounds.

Because of those injuries, they wouldn’t let him reenlist for a third term to go back to North Vietnam. He remained in the “reserve” and periodically he would disappear for a few weeks … then war would break out in some banana Republic. He spent an hour teaching me how to pack a backpack for survival in the jungles of Vietnam. Crazy SOB & a legit scary human.
